Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS - Thursday, May 19, 1983 - Page Five Sports & Recreation Cowboys Beat Cowboys in Quarters KANAB The Kanab Cowboys stayed in the running for the state baseball championship Friday afternoon in Kanab by defeating the Grantsville Cowboys in a quarterfinal battle. The game was close up to the third inning when the Pokes broke it open with a effort to move ahead, never to look back. Freshman pitcher Hank Crosby took charge of the game in the first five innings, allowing four runs before being replaced by freshman James Reidhead in the sixth. Nolan Reidhead took over the pitching chores in the seventh. The northern Cowboys (Grantsville) started the game with a leadoff home run to take the first lead, 1 0, but Kanab countered with three of their own in their half of the fust inning and never were headed. Seniors Darren Gifford, Mickey Houston and Nolan Reidhead along with sophomore Jason Hafen and freshman Crosby led the Kanab offensive attack, each adding to the Pokes RBIs. The Cowboys three-ru- n first innings began when Reidhead singled and Houston doubled to put runners at second and third, setting the stage for Hafens single which drove the two runs in. Two batters later Crosby scored Hafen. In the third inning Mickey Houston lead off with a double, Hafen made it to base on an error. T. J. Houston singled and then Crosby beat our a two-ru- n double. Tony Johnson grounded out and Danny Cox went to first on balls. Gifford then singled to score Crosby and move Cox to third. Certainly I could spend months in this column discussing the virtues of a great many fine publications, picture books, informational pamphlets, natural history essays, novels and even poetry, and without doubt I will talk again of reading about southern Utah and northern Arizona. But today the subject is history, and the focus is on a man who influenced the course of events in the Southwest as much as any man every did, Jacob Hamblin. Jacob Hamblin never has become a high profile Jolfc hero'; like Kit Carson or Jim Bridger, Davey Crocket and Daniel Boone. Its disappointing to think that a man who exemplified better than anyone the American Ideal and Character, has so far been unable to capture the American Imagination to the extent that he deserves. Just like the original American game al and unlike any of the heroes, Jacob Hamblin was directly involved in a struggle for religious freedom. Also, like many of America's Western heroes, he spent a large portion of his life carving a safe home for himself and others out of the difficult, though beautiful wilderness. But, where Jacoib differs from so many revered Western paragons, is in the fact that his methods were those of peace, intelligence, integrity, and dignity for all parties, instead of violence to man and beast. Jacob didn't die in a battle like the Alamo. He never killed any of the folks who hindered the progress of his various missions. He established and maintained peace only through the power of respect, something the Americans of today ought to admire more than they do. And, of course, one of the best reasons for picking up a book and reading about ol Jacob, is simply to follow his trail of adventures as he Pilgrims, other American Kanab Pro Golfs in Provo Jim Hunter, Kanabs Coral Clitts Golf Course pro will be entered in the Provo Open golf tournament. Everywhere you go around the region of Kane County and Grand Canyon, youll be stepping on old footprints of Jacob Hamblin. Walk down the streets of Kanab and listen to Jacob and Levi Stewart debating where to build the Fort, and how. Drive through Zion and imagine Jake and John D. Lee exploring the canyons of the Virgin River. Every river trip that leaves Lees Ferry floats out onto the wide Colorado beside the ghost of the raft Jacob Hamblin built to make the first successful crossing there. I always tell the story of how the first two major side canyons and big rapids below Lee's Ferry received their names. Jacob was searching for another ford across the dangerous Colorado River. He had been traveling light and depending on the desert to supply him with his meals. While riding up out of the first canyon, he shot a badger. That evening, down between the high walls of the second canyon, he made camp and prepared to cook the badger for supper. The idea struck him that he should have some vegetable matter to eat along with his badger meat, and so, since he had heard that the local Indians often cooked and ate part of the Agave plant, Jacob cut out the heart of a nearby yucca and dropped it into the boiling stew pot with the badger carcass. Well, from the badger he rendered nothing much besides lard, and from the yucca heart he got mostly lye, and so his supper that turned out to be soap stew. And thus Badger and Soap Creeks, and their respective rapids, were named. The horse trail down Kanab Creek to the river was engineered by Jacob Hamblin. Gold miners used it one summer during a fruitless gold rush. Major John Wesley Powell ended his second river survey expedition at Kanab Creek, where Jacob Hamblin met him and escorted him out to the newborn town of Kanab. Major Powell admired Hamblin, and hired Jake as a guide and interpreter. Together, they explored many parts of the Arizona Strip. What a guy, that Jacob Hamblin. I was just reading about the time Jake and two miners were jailed in a hogan by the Navajos. The Navajo were upset because four of their young men had just been killed by a white man in Long Valley. The murderer was an outlaw, Tom McCarty, not a Mormon settler. But the Navajo held the Mormons, and Jake Hamblin re sponsible. Jake sat at the back of me nogan watching the fire make coals over which the Navajo chiefs intended to roast him. It looked like a hot ending for ol Jake. How did he escape? Youll just have to read the history of Kane County to find out!
