THE v Senior Profile Ruth Pepper was born and raised in Marlette, Michigan. She is next to the oldest of a family of seven girls and two boys. Ruth graduated from the Marlette High School and attended college in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan for two years. She then moved to Detroit with one of her sisters and went to work in a defense factory as a first class precision grinder where she worked for the next 25 years at the same time raising her family. She and Charles bought a home in Ferndale, which is a Detroit suburb. Ruth took a quilting class in 1975. She lived a mile from the Michigan State fairgrounds and decided to enter the quilting competition. For her first entry she won second prize for a puff quilt, which was made from used tie scraps. She won a prize every year. In 1984 she won the blue ribbon for her quilt Seven Sisters. This was very special to Ruth because she is one of seven sisters. The story of how Ruth and Charles moved to Kanab is very interesting. They traveled to the various canyons in Utah and Arizona and were greatly impressed. When they visited the Grand Canyon they would overnight in Kanab, then travel on to Brigham City and to Montana where they have family and friends. They decided that when Charles retired they would move out here. They came to Kanab twice before retirement looking for a home to buy but didnt find what they really wanted. In April of 1986 they sold their home in Michigan, rented a house in Kanab and later bought a lovely home in the Ranchos. Since moving here, they have been some of Kanab's biggest boosters. Ruth fills in as needed as a volunteer in the Kane County Information Center. She also works as assistant cook and baker at the Center. She and Charles actively support their community church here in Kanab. Ruth has enjoyed living in a Mormon community and for those of you who are acquainted with Ruth you know she really practices her philosophy in life which is to live and let live and to respect all people regardless of race, color or creed. 06ituams Kezia H.
