Reagan, honorary chairwoman of the organization, hosted the families at a White House reception. The Turley family was in Kanab this week for the funeral services of Davids father, Lawrence Turley, held Monday. A former Kanab couple and 13 family members met with Americas first lady, Nancy Reagan July 27 in Washington, D.C. David and Alice Turley, now of Mill Creek, Washington, and their kin were named one of six great American families by the Ameri Concerning the special experience David said: We were thrilled, excited, and stunned. The Turleys, AFS spokesman Wayne Scott says, were chosen for how they satisfied three criteria individual growth of each family member, strength of teamwork and love in the family; and friendship and service extended to other people. These families were honored on behalf of all families who d values in their apply the he said. lives, When the Turleys lived in Kanab they were associated with Alices brother. Dale Clarkson, in the real estate business, Alice working as a secretary, and David helping with the development of a time-sharanch, northeast of Kanab. David currently is a consultant for LPL Technical Services and Alice is marketing manager for Costco Wholesale. The AFS points out that the Great American Families that were honored by Mrs. Reagan are not contest winners. Together, they represent a diversity of families who quietly d values in their apply daily lives thereby helping to strengthen the nation, Scott stated. Great American Families are first honored in community ceremonies held throughout America during National Family Week (Thanksgiving Week). Affiliates of the six participating national organizations, with media support, invite local residents to nominate outstanding families for these community honors. Family has always been the central element in our lives," David says. When I hear about parents or brothers and sisters who havent written to each other for years or havent spoken to each other, I cant conceive of that. We enjoy being together as family. Its like theres a magncticism between us." The Reed Henderson has some sheep and cattle in a field east of Kanab. He has an irrigation ditch running across it that has to be cleaned out every so often, mainly because this lady living by his field has a pipe running from her sink into the ditch. While Reed is cleaning his ditch he sees all this bright red stuff running into his irrigation ditch, which to Reed, is blood. He drops his shovel and goes to a telephone and calls the police. This resident is Reed says, Nedra Baughman. There's something wrong at Nedra's house, theres blood running in my ditch from her sink. So the City policeman hurriesidown to Nedra's. Nedra hears this Knock on her door and is busy in the middle what? Canning beets! She sees it's Doug lnd wonders, Now whats happened?4 She calls Come on in, as Doug says, Nedra, are you all right. She says, Why yes, and shows her hands all red and messy with beets. He says, Oh my, Fm glad you're canning beets. And then tells her the story about the phone call. Nedra tells Doug how pleased she is to know people are concerned, and to tell Reed that it's nice to know that he was concerned. They laughed and Doug went back to his duties and Reed went on with his cleaning dishes. Turleys are devoHt Mormons, a faith that emphasizes family relations. We do have a strong religious committment, says Alice. That is probably the biggest help in strengthening families. We believe that families are forever. That mission was set for us at the beginning of our marriage. We have a motto m the church that says, No success in life can compensate for failure in the home, For all their success in rearing a family, David and Alice Turley know there were occasional failures. We do feel that weve made many mistakes along the way, she says. No one has all the right answers. We have just had one goal in mind, and that is to remain as a close family. We havent done anything spectacular, David Turley said. We have always felt that we were just an average family, but its true that weve done a lot of little things together. Apparently all those little things weve done together have added up. of-gu-ess Entertainment, Contests Set for Fair show the plaque they received as one of six "Great American Families", to relatives and friends, Patsy and Dale Clarkson. Caution, however, in both cases, is still required. According to District Ranger Lawrence Michalsky, the restrictions were lifted because of recent rainfall. Ordinarily, smoking and campfire restrictions are in effect during the summer months. Michalsky said the restrictions were necessary because of the unusually dry past winter that left dead logs, limbs and brush tinder dry. Spring rains helped green up grasses but had little effect on the actual fire danger, said Michalsky. He added that the fire situation this year is similar to the 1977 fire season when one fire in Pleasant Va"ey burned over 1,100 acres. In comparison, last months Willis Fire, which started from lightning, burned more than 2,000 acres north of Jacob Lake. In similar business, Michalsky said he wanted to remind woodcutters that firewood permits are available Monday through Saturday at the district office in Fredonia and on the first Tuesday of each month at the Chamber of Commerce office in Page. He said woodcutters need to know that chainsaw spark arresters are required whenever the saw is used on National Forest land. He explained that that restriction was made in the interest of preventing forest fires.
