Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS - Thursday, October 17, 1985 - Page Six Ramses II PUBLIC NOTICES Why it Came to BYU When looking for reasons the Egyptian government chose to send one of its most valuable exhibits of ancient artifacts to a private university in the relatively isolated Mountain West, one need look no further than Dr. C. Wilfred Griggs. Griggs, professor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University and director of Ancient Studies, has headed up a promising archaeology excavation in Egypt for five years. During that time, Egyptians overseeing his project have come to appreciate him as a professional of high integrity and as a friend with a personality they find thoroughly engaging. Because of that relationship, officials in Egypts Department of Antiquities made the unusual move of offering Griggs a chance to host the exhibit. You know why we trust him so completely? says Dr. Abdel-Azi- between Americans and Egyptians, Griggs explains, was crucial at every step in the discussions. "When youre negotiating with Egyptian people, theres a lot of ground that has to be covered because of two different cultures coming together. We do everything in pretty much a legal way here-- we write up contracts and theyre almost standard. In that part of the world, you sign contracts.... but by and large it's the negotiating ahead of time that really establishes the contract. It isnt the piece of paper, its the feeling, the friendship, the trust, the confidence." That Griggs already had solid trust with many Egyptians was of great help. But beyond the trust. chartering a cargo plane, securing ride, and trucks with and helicopter police obtaining escort for the truck ride to and from the airports. -- Devising a museum security system that includes armed guards, camera surveillance and wiring within each artifact case. -- Writing and publishing a book and that describes each artifact provides historical background. together and teaching a course about the ancient Egypt for students, community members, and those interested in being exhibit hosts. When Griggs was offered the exhibit, he was given only a day or two to respond, and he quickly made calls to find out who in Utah might host the showing. He did not consider BYU at first, he said, because he thought the project was too big for a university. As a courtesy, though, he gave BYU administrators a chance to say no. They didnt. They told me to give the Egyptians a preliminary yes and that began a process of negotiating and conversing-ju- st an incredible amount of busy-nes- s that has gone on from then until now, Griggs says. Most museums have more than a year to prepare for a major exhibit, but BYU has had less than three months from the time the university signed a contract on Aug. 5 to the opening date. Preparations, all overseen by Griggs, have included: ) Clerk d Plaintiffs attorneys, Street, P.O.
