Demolition Derby Bring Once again the Explorer Posts of the Kanab Boy Scout District and the Laurels of the Kanab Stake will be getting their jalopies ready for the July 4th Demolition Derby. The Derby was first held in our area on July 4, 1982. The Explorer Presidents Committee decided they would try a Demolition Derby for one of their yearly activities. They asked the Laurels if they would like to take part in the Derby. It would be known as the powder puff. The Laurel classes took the challenge. The Demolition Derby was a success. Some in the community expressed their interest in the Derby, also. So last year the Derby was opened so the community could enter cars. Ronnie Johnson from Explorer Post 369 (Fredonia Second Ward) won the Explorers heat; Sendee Birch from the Fredonia Second Ward Laurels won the powder puff heat and Tom Reinhart took the community heat. This year the Demolition Derby Committee has added another attraction. In between each heat, the Color Country Motocross, a recently formed motorcycle club, will perform stunts. One of the stunts will be jumping one of the demolition derby cars. ERA UTAH PROPERTIES, INC. East Center - Kanab, Utah 84741 644-260- 6 Boise Homes school. Gusting Winds Sink Two Boats National Park Service rangers rescued seven men Friday, May 10, when high winds on Lake Powell sank boats in two separate incidents. District Ranger John Benjamin of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area reported that winds gusting to 50 MPH in the Wahweap area made boating hazardous. In the first incident, an Starcraft with four men aboard lost power after launching at Stateline Ramp at about 8:45 a.m. The boat was driven by high winds into the Ice Cream Cove area of Wahweap Bay where the boat sank, leaving Lawery Rhodes, 39, and Kenneth McGrath, 43, both of Duncan, Arizona; William Barbers, 44, of Franklin, Arizona; and Thomas Freestone, 43, of Safford, Arizona stranded on an isolated talus slope. The rangers responded to a citizens band radio distress call sent out before the boat sank, and after an extensive search located the men at about 10 a.m. Rough water prevented their recovery until 4 p.m. after the second incident. The Starcraft boat was recovered with unspecified damage. Rangers Mark Igo, Larry Belli, Jim Holland, and Irv Francisco were enroute to recover the stranded group at Ice Cream Cove when they encountered a second swamping. At about 2 p.m. a 17 foot Sea Ox rented from Wahweap Marina swamped and capsized with three men aboard while coming across Wahweap Bay from Castle Rock. The Sea Ox, with Jim Kevorkian, 32, and Richard Shroads, Sr., CO, of Arcadia, California; and Ruhard Shroads, Jr., 27, of Duarte, California was breaking waves for a bass boat across Wahweap Bay when they lost power, turned sideways to the waves, and capsized. The three passengers were able to get their life preservers on. but they were not well fastened All three became fatigued and hype thermic during the 15 20 minutes that they were in the water.
