Constitution Does Not Protect Pornography This is to inform the citizens of Kanab about the success which concerned individuals are finding in their efforts to combat pornography in their communities. The National Federation for Decency is now sponsoring a nationwide boycott of 7 11 convenience stores. Many people do not realize that the top retailer of pornographic magazines is the Southland Corporation, which sells more porn through its over stores than any other 7,500 retailer in America. John Thompson, national chairman, has been asked repeatedly to remove these magazines, but refuses, since the chain makes millions of dollars from them. Mr. Thompson ignores over 130 separate studies which conclusively link pornography with sex crimes. Sex offenders frequently have pornographic materials in their possession at the time of arrest, and admit being stimulated and sometimes even instructed by them on how to commit the crime. Mr. Thompson is unconcerned about the results of a study conducted by researchers at the University of New Hampshire, w herein it was found that the states with the highest readership of Mens Magazines (Playboy, Penthouse and Hustler) also have the highest incidence of reported rapes. Be aware that children are all too often the victims, and in 80 percent of these cases, the offender is not a stranger to the child. Pornography is not a pleasant issue, but when will the moral majority decide it is time to protect porn's victims? Of course, not every person who reads Playboy will become a psychotic rapist, just as not everyone who takes a drink becomes an alcoholic. Even so, porn desensitizes and coarsens its read1 ers' attitudes. The sublimal message of porn is is to be used as a thing for one's own sexual satisfaction. Mr. Thompson counters this that a person has the evidence by saying that Best policy" for distributing the magazines (meaning that they are sold only to adults on request), ignoring the statement made by Henry Boatwright (Chairman of the U.S. Advisory Board for Social Concerns) that over 70 percent of all pornographic literature ends up in the hands of minors. Ten years ago when I was starting school at KHS there were plenty of these magazines floating around, but now they are being sold only a few blocks from the middle school. Those who would defend the porn industry often cry, Censorship! First Amendment! Freedom of Expression! Please be aware that the constitution of our country has never protected obscenity as a form of expression any more than it has protected libel or slander. Some porn defenders claim that no one has a right to censor obscenity which consenting adults view, but the supreme court has held that other rights and interests overrule adults obscenity-viewinrights, namely the interest of the public in the quality of life, the total community environment, the tone of commerce, and possibly the public safety itself (Paris Theatre case). Taking this into consideration, we have not only the right but the moral obligation to clean up our communities. In recent months, largely through requests and boycotting, citizens like you and I have caused 6,000 American stores to pull the porn from their shelves, including 650 Albertsons in Utah and Idaho. Just stores in this month the Spanish Fork and American Fork joined the Provo and Orem stores in removing the porn. (I dont believe the Provo or Orem stores ever carried pron.) If the management of can do it, so can the those management of Kanabs! Some encouragement is all that is needed. In the case of some of the above-mentione- 6,000 d stores, all it took was one courteous, concerned phone call or letter. Some managers had wanted to remove the magazines but were waiting for one person to object! If the management 1 of Kanabs complies with requests to remove its porn, by all means give them your patroniza-tion- , as well as other businesses which consistently uphold good community values. However, if they refuse, encourage your friends and neighbors to patronize other businesses which cater to the values held by the majority of Kanabites. There are other things you can do to help Kanab: 1. Visit the video rental stores and see what is offered. If offensive movies are offered, speak to the owner andor manager and request that they remove them. Unfortunately the worst movies often bring in the most money, so any video rental store which cleans up its act will need everyones support and business. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR g 2. Become educated about porn and other social issues that affect our families. For more information, write Utah Valley Citizens for Decency, P.O. Box 1247, Orem, Utah 84057. Write to Mr. Thompson and express your displeasure with his insistence in marketing porn: John ConvenThompson, Chairman, ience Stores, 2828 N. A retail theft ordinance is being formulated, adapted from the state statute. It will help step up shoplifting prosecution and better define some retail thefts such as exchange and price tag changes to get an item cheaper than marked. Optimism was expressed with the progress being made on the master streets plan and the order it will contribute to development and land usage in the Kanab area. Further study is going into the concept of annexation of the whole valley of Kanab City's sphere of influence into the dty. Boundaries are being set along lines established on previous master plans. Dear Editor, Our schools will soon be in a transition period following the appointment of the new principals. We feel that the individuals chosen to fill these shoes .vill have a dramatic effect on the smoothness of transition and the future quality of Kanab schools. As applicants are being considered for appointment to these positions, this is the time for those who are concerned to voice to their respective school board representatives the qualities and qualifications they would prefer to see in those taking the new positions. We would like to see the new administrators anxious to follow the policies and procedures, eager to work with their respective PTA and student groups, and willing to organize and uphold a code of honor promoting honesty, respect, and consideration toward others. We have seen these qualities being upheld in current administrations and would like them to continue for the future benefit of our children. We urge those who agree with our recommendations or have other suggestions to contact their representative to the School Board and make them aware of your concerns. Dear Editor: I don't know what all the commotion is all about Save Our Hospital? Ive seen many other businesses fold because of lack of support since Ive been in town. In fact, I could have used a Save the Photo Shop many times myself. The idea that, if we have no hospital, no one will move here to buy my camera is probably false. I sell very few to locals as it is, with a hospital. The fact is that there is little support of local businesses by the local population. Most of Kanabs dollars are spent elsewhere. It is scary to think of losing our hospital, but lets face it: only my family and those others of you out there that do faithfully spend our dollars locally are going to suffer. The majority is winning this battle (as usual) and many more businesses will yet CLOSE unless we change our ways. I usually keep my mouth shut but today I was burnt! Sincerely, (Sgd.)
