The idea for the cookie sale was born back in the twenties when individual troops held cookie sales as s to support their activities. Word of the sales success spread, and soon the number of participating troops grew. The first cookies sale of commercially-bake- d was held 50 years ago. That first year, the girls sold cookies based on the recipe of two troop leaders and baked in the shape of the Girl Scout insignia. This year, a special 50th anniversary cookie has been created to commemorate the event. It will be sold along with six other varieties: the Thin Mint, Samoa, shortbread Trefoil, peanut butter patty, chocolate chunk and peanut butter creme sandwich. The annual cookie sale is still the main fundraiser for this organization for girls between the ages of 6 and 17. Girl Scout cookies are the cookies that have made dreams come true for over 50 years. The Cottage Program has built a national reputation effectively breaking community denial and motivating individuals, families, and entire communities to assume responsibility for the long-terprevention of chemical dependency. Denial is present in individuals, families, organizations and entire communities. Bernie Boswell, Executive Director of the Cottage Program, states, "denial may be even a more serious problem than alcohol or drug abuse. Denial, too, is both cause and effect. Without denial at the outset, there would be none of this syndrome of alcoholism, only a person with a drinking problem- -a person for whom help is indeed available. Yet, once the interactive process of alcoholism is started, each new stage forges its own, almost desperate, need for even more denial."
