Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS - Thursday, January 26, 1SS4 Dr. Glenn Presents Drug, Alcohol Lecture In Kanab ' Last year at the Youth Alcohol Conference. I recorded Dr. Stephen Glenns speeches. 1 have, for the last two days, been listening to them again. It has gotten me so excited to think that I will be able to listen to hint in person and in our community. This man is excellent and has something for everyone of us to use in our lives. would like to pass on just a little bit of what he said up there, hoping it will make you want to cancel all your other meetings, workshops and appointments, so that you can listen to him when he speaks to us on Feb. 6. 1984 at 6:30 p.m. in the Kanab High School said Venna Haynes, auditorium, representative of the Kanab Elementary PTA. Dr. Glenn says, "Recognizing as w c do today that for a human being. 1 perception 'How 1 perceive the world' determines my attitudes and motivation. If my perception is. 'I can't do that much for myself, what I do doesn't matter that much anyw ay' and 'It's all a matter of fate or luck', then my attitude is 'Why try , and my motivation is zero, and all the skills in the world are irrelevant to me as a person. On the other hand, if my perceptions are clear. 1 can find a way to do some things. 'What 1 do is significant. I have power to influence what happens in my life and I'm not dependent on fate or luck', then my attitude is to try and my motivation is high and even if I have low skills. I'll work, innovate, borrow, create and try as long as that perception is alive and then the skills become relevant to me. IS and worthwhile significant and I can be an influence there. When thats done well, the rest become relevant because the bottom four reflect skills rather than perceptions, the difference is if you'll notice 1 said that for each of the perceptions must have experience PLUS dialogue with more mature people to help me understand my worth, my significance, my power and my influence. Skills, on the other hand, is w hat you know and how to do it. Practice is the best teacher here. Ihe more I'm required to do something in my daily life, the more skill 1 develop in doing it. "'The High Risk individual today has not had adequate practice in l, and often because he is not required or rewarded regularly in life and often because a parent rescued and enabled me and if you're familiar with that term, a rescuing and enabling parent is a parent that anticipates all the things that can go wrong and takes care of them for the child instead of giving them the dignity of paying their own dues w ith little things that dont hurt them in that lasting way, to avoid breaking their necks learning the same lessons later, when the parent isn't there to rescue them. There is much more and just as good, but come and see for yourselves and take much home with you.
