Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Thursday, May 5, Page Nine 1SS3 BYU Alumni Announces Tour Schedule The BYU Alumni Association will sponsor five tours and expeditions for 1983, includ- visits to include the Independence Temple Lot, RLDS headquarters, Liberty Jail, Far West, Nauvoo Temple site, Carthage Jail, Kirtland Temple, Palmyra, Joseph Smith home, Sacred Grove, the Hill Cum-ora- h Pageant and other points of interest. Dr. Larry C. Porter, a professor and chairman of the Department of Church History and Doctrine at BYU will direct the tour. The PhotoBackpacking adventure is scheduled from July 16 to 22 with Wally Barrus, a photographer and assistant professor of communications at BYU and Alma Carlyle, a clinical psychologist w ho is an expert photographer and outdoorsman as directors. A series of will prepare for the trek before departure on Monday, July 18. Campfire programs, photo instruction, fishing and the breathtaking scenery of the high Uintas are the main attractions. Enrollment is lim ing the popular Church History Caravan, Mexico Caravan, and Shakespearean Festival tour to Southern Utah. There will also be two new tours this year, the Indian-land- s Caravan and a Photo Backpacking Expedition to Utahs beautiful Uinta Mountains. The series is a continuation of alumni tours and expedit, tions designed for educational, and enjoyable family vacations. All BYU alumni, parents, friends, students and LDS Church members are invited. The caravans are especially for those with designed campers, motor homes, trailers and similar recreational equipment. The Church History Caravan, from July 14 to 23, kicks off the summer tour season. The rendezvous point will be at Independence,4 umwbu Mo., with low-cos- iHi'Htuti wk well-know- n in Ww ited. By popular demand, options in travel to two the Festival at Shakespearean Cedar City on July 29, 30 and 31 are offered. Option A includes evening and afternoon performances of Henry V and Gentlemen of Verona, with overnight accommodations. Option A includes al of Option A plus another evening performance, "The Merchant of Venice, and a second night of accommodations. Departure for home on the Option B plan will follow an early sacrament meeting on Sunday morning in Cedar City. Two meals are provided with each option. Dr. Robert A Nelson, an assistant professor of Theatre and Cinematic Arts at BYU will be the guest faculty member. The Indianlands Caravan will take place in northern New Mexico, with the rendezvous for the tour taking place at Mesa Verde. Dr. Karl Young, a professor emeritus of English at BYU who is also an expert on Native American cultures of the region, will lead the tour. Included are visits to Aztec National Park, Taos, Sante Fe, the annual Indian Corn Dance at Santa Domingo, A coma Pueblo, and Blue Water State Park. An is Chaco option Canyon National Monument. Details of the Mexico Caravan are still being aris ranged, but departure scheduled for late December and the tour will continue for about three weeks. The itinerary will include Mexico a Ballet Folklorico City, performance, Sun and Moon pyramids, Patzucuaro, Lake Chapala, Guadalajara, Mazat-lan- , with possible options to Yucatan, the Temple of the Warriors, Chichen Itza, the Pyramid of the Magician, and other sites. On all tours and caravans, evening activities, lectures, and family fun are included. Lectures w'ill highlight the programs and provide background not available on other tours. U of U Hosts Alcohol, Drug School Utah, who will Pictured above are Michael and Karen Westphal of St. George, UFWC-GFW- C Annual Conference in Kanab. at the International Stars dinner of the University of Utah on alcoholism and other drug dependencies will be held June 19 through June 24 at the University in Salt Lake City. The week course is dedicated to drug and alcohol abuse and the community members who attend the school will work on various pograms in the community. The course is sponsored by various organizations in the community or by individuals who care to make a contribution to this excellent drug and alcohol program. The courses are taught by professionals in the drug and alcohol fields. The tuition and room and board is paid by the sponsoring organization and the only cost to the person attending the course is transportation which usually can be arranged by sharing the ride. Clyde Vance, convention chairman, estimates that between Clubwomen from throughout the state will register for the three-daconference, hostessed by the Southern District of the UFWC. Adonis Robinson is president of the Southern District, which is comprised of the Kanab Womens Civic Club, led by Jo Smith President, and the Ladies Literary League, with Joan Lee, President. There will be a parking lot sale. We will also be selling homemade bakery goods and some of your favorite paperback novels. Don't forget! Come support the Spanish Club! Kane County ambulances made three runs the past week. On April 19 a patient was tranported from home to the hospital. On April 20 both Kanab ambulances were used to transport people involved in the car wreck at the mouth of Johnson Canyon to the hospital and on April 22 a person "Money makes a man laugh." was transported to the Dixie John Selden Medical Center in St. George. mmm i Tea are scheduled on Thursday, May 12. from p.m., followed by tours of the local area. Phyllis Stewart is in charge of the Tours program. Chinese fare will be served at 7 p.m. that evening, when the International Stars dinner will take place, and club members will don costumes of various countries. Entertainment for the International event will be provided by Mark Downward on the Marimba, Sword Karate by Don Wudarski; South of the Border dances by Michael and Karen Westphal of St. Hawaiian Utah; George, dance by Lupe O'Reilly. The evening will conclude with an international Costume parade. The Friday, May 13 events will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a Spiritual Freedom" prayer breakfast; Valton Jackson will be guest speaker. The General Session of the Conference will officially be called to order at 9:30 a.m. by Harriet Eliason, President of the Utah Federation of Women's Clubs. Keynote speaker will be Peter Ellison, Zions First National Bank Trust Dept. A hats on Parade luncheon will follow, with Jeri of the Winger, President-elec- t General Federation of Women's Clubs as the scheduled speaker. Clyde Vance has been named Clubwoman of the Year by the Kanab Women's Civic Club and is an entry in the state competition, Nell Jones, Kanab, is general chairman of the Art Awards program, assisted by Jo Smith. The conference w ill convene at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, for a business session, followed by a brunch and entertainment at 11 a.m. All local UFWC club members are urged to attend this informational, inspirational, and educational conference, where you can meet and greet visiting club members of the largest international service organization of volunteer women in the world.
