KHS Athlete Wins BYU Decathlon Eric Brown, one of the top athletes to come out of Kanab High School, crowned his athletic career last weekend with a convincing win of the BYU Invitational Decathlon. Participating on a cold and rainy day in Provo, Brown amassed 6253 points in the spectacular grueling, to win the first place trophy, 315 points ahead of the John nearest competitor. Kelly of East High School took second place with 5938 points. Eric took first place in three events, second place in two, third place in three, fourth in one and sixth in one. Eric Ironically enough, scored more points last year (under better weather conditions) when he took second place. Scores were lower this year, largely because of the poor weather. Brown took first place in the 100 meter, the long jump and the 400 meter. Of all the events that can test an athletes ability, none is so demanding as the competition in track and field. No other sport is such a thorough test as having to compete in nine or ten events requiring such different talents. Last year Eric finished second behind Keith Robinson of American Fork who set a new decathlon record of 7567 points, which exceeded the listed national high school decathlon record. Eric is a senior at Kanab High School this year and was named to both the major daily teams in newspaper football, as well as being named most valuable player."
