Show I I SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS - Thursday, May 13, 1982 - Paga Five From Fredonia Senior Citizens Page One Montoya interrupted and asked Mrs. Honey to stay away from staff matters. Wed rather hear from the community, he said. He did. Several Fredonia senior citizens angrily recounted what they see as disparity between services provided in Flagstaff and Williams and those available in Fredonia. They mentioned such things as the fleet of vans used to transport senior citizens in those communities and compared them to the sedan in single, county-owne- d Fredonia. They questioned why the sedan in Fredonia has been restricted to one trip a week to Kanab for medical and other appointments and one trip a month to St. George, when there seems to be unlimited transportation available in Flagstaff. Another bone of contention was the meal program. Three meals a week are provided in Fredonia for seniors who meet certain qualifications while five a week are provided elsewhere. Ivan Goodall, representative to the Fre-doni- Council on Aging, Regional told of a comment made by a community services supervisor that in the event budget cuts made it necessary to trim the number of meals provided, Fredonias program would be cut to two per week while Flagstaff and Williams would be cut to four. Goodall questioned the reasoning behind that. Montoya tried to explain that the majority of the countys population and tax base lies in Flagstaff and Williams while Fredonia has of both. In only about 2 addition, he said, the cities of Flagstaff and Williams both contribute money and facilities to match the countys effort. Flagstaff, for example. pitched in $93,000 last year while Fredonia contributed nothing. Even so, Montoya said, Fredonia received 7 of the services provided to senior citizens. He said the county has only enough funds without contribution from Fredonia to provide a total of 24 meals a week here. Comments from the crowd repeatedly turned toward the conflicts Hazel between Honey and her supervisors, citing the use of allegedly abusive and obscene language directed at Mrs. Honey. The Fredonia seniors were outspoken in their defense of Mrs. Honey. Montoya and Coconino County Manager Brian Hawley reminded the group that grievance procedures exist for handling those complaints and promised to meet with Mrs. Honey after the public meeting. They reminded those present that discussion of the public situation could jeopardize her. Fredonia councilmember Dixie Judd spoke in favor of Mrs. Honey, saying she had received the impression that Mrs. Honey is disliked by her supervisors. "We object to the treatment she gets, NoMrs. Judd commented. thing would make us happier than to be able to separate from the county and run our own program if we could. As it is, we have to fight with the county for everything we get. County manager Hawley responded by explaining that the problem stems from the fact that Coconino Countys money for the senior citizen program comes from the Federal government. Federal regulatons, he said, limit the amount of money that can be spent and what can be done with it. Good intentions dont exceeding what DODGE CHRYSLER Dependable Used Cars& Trucks Service For Makes Al! St. George Attorney Kaibab Ind. Reports 2nd Quarter Loss Announces Candidacy allowable. Thus, even though Mrs. Honey's intentions are good, he said, she could jeopardize the program in Fredonia by exceeding its present limits. Hawley offered two reasons why other parts of Coconino County receive more services than Fredonia. The first, he said, is that most of the population is there. The second is that other cities match, practically dollar for dollar, the funding from the county and federal government. Hawley then proposed that, if an agreement could be reached between the Fredonia City Council and the county, that funding could be allocated directly to Fredonia instead of through the countys community services. This would allow Fredonia to set up and administer its own senior citizens program. The meeting adjourned as Hawley and the others moved into a personnel session to try to solve the conflicts between Mrs. Honey and her supervisors. Fredonia Councilman Charlie Glaspie says he is personally not able to speak for the entire council, but feels that they will certainly consider Hawleys proposal. Attorney Gary W. Pendleton today announced his candidacy for Circuit Judge of the Ninth Circuit Court. Pendleton is presently the prosecutor for the Washington County Attorneys Office where he has been responsible for the criminal prosecution since November, 1979. He will formally file his declaration of candidacy on July 1 when he resigns his position with the County Attorneys Office and e returns to private practice. full-tim- Gary W. Pendleton ' . Non-Partis- an Pendleton said that it is the obligation of the government to provide a neutral forum for the resolution of disputes between government and citizens as well as disputes between citizens. While efficient administration of the court is imperative, the expedition of the Courts calendar never justifies depriving the unwary of fundamental rights and fair play. I have not tired of the courtroom and believe that there are no problems confronting our judicial system which cannot be resolved by hard work on the part of the judiciary. More importantly, the problems can be resolved without curtailment of the rights we are cherish. The circuit court system was created in 1977. The system is presently staffed by lawyers who are acting as city court judges when the Circuit Court Act became effective in 1978. These judges must stand for election in November. This is the peoples first opportunity to have a voice in the selection of their circuit judge. Pendleton is married to the former Debra Simmons of and they Chico, California have two sons and one daughter. Committee to Assist Government was solely organized as a means to help better the community, in whatever way it could. The thinking was that when any agency, city or county, wanted some assistance, the committee would be available to help in any way the agency asked, either in advisory or even arbitration. More ground rules for the functioning of the committee will be forthcoming. While having some misgivings about the committee, some local officials said there were areas already that it could be of value to them. The next meeting of the committee will be held May 27 in the courthouse. A committee, formed to "work toward community betterment held its first meeting last week in the new Kane County Courthouse. The committee, which was selected to try and get a n of the Kanab area community, includes: Doug Carroll, Emma Houston, Jim Rasmussen, Karen Alvey, Marlin Brown, Wendel HeaMike ton, Dale Clarkson, Paul Noel, Jenkins, Bob Russell and Steve Weidner. In their first meeting held April 30 the group only talked about what objectives would be and also organized themselves. Steve Weidner was selected as chairman with Karen Alvey as secretary. There were some questions as to just what the committee would do and how it would function, but it was the feeling of those present that it non-partis- cross-sectio- fact-findin- -- -" ft ft lafti 11 Kaibab Industries will report a loss for the second fiscal quarter ended March 31, 1982 it was announced today. Net loss for the three month period was $1,303,592 equal to $.85 a share on sales of $33,571,438. This compared with a net loss of $46,501 or $.03 a share, on sales of $36,232,111 for the corresponding prior year period. For the six months ended March 31, the net loss was $1,952,340 equal to $1.28 a share on sales of $66,412,501 versus net income of $35,194 or $.02 a share on sales of $71 ,704,957 for the first half of last year. A.M. Whiting, President, said the losses were a direct result of depressed conditions in the housing industry. The current slump is the worst since World War II. The prospects for immediate improvement depend on the governments efforts to control and reduce interest rates. The gasoline marketing and insurance operating segments were profitable in the first half while lumber manufacturing, building material distribution and real estate development all posted losses. We are having windy weather, as you can plainly see and feel, but Saturday there were some strong gusts. One casualty was the old, dead cottonwood tree that has stood for so many years at the north end of Rolland Lambs field on the west end of Orderville. It has worries me for most of the eight years I have lived in my small plot of land next to the field. Twice before limbs have broken off the tree and crashed down to break fences and a field gate. This was the repeat performance that ended my worries, though there is still about 20 feet of the trunk ft1 "ft ft ft Welcome Spring 10 off Mon.-Fr- Aquariums and The average 100 watt light bulb uses one kilowatt hour for every ten hours its on. 586-659- 1 Taylor and Jean Crosbv of Kanab have been called to r mission for serve a The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaint in the Pennsylvania Philadelphia Mission. Yesterday, the two big, bare limbs, with twisted and skeleton-lik- e branches, came crashing down to earth, with smaller branches and twigs scattering all over the area. One large branch fell on the fence that faces the highway. Earl Sorensen says it looks like one large limb hit the telephone pole and bounced back to the east, falling on top of another huge limb. Anyway, no phone lines or guy wires were broken, thank goodness. I haven't counted the many cars that have stopped and the people who have gotten out to take pictures of the old dead tree with White Mountain and Sugar Knoll in the background. Anyway Its An III Wind That Blows No Good! The before picture was taken from the northeast, several years ago, after the tree had started dying. The after picture was taken Sunday morning, from the east and much closer.
