Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS - Thursday, May 6, 1982 - Page Six ESj, i Spotlight on People Mark Baker V Whats a Baptist minister from Indiana doing here in the middle of Mormon country? Simple. Hes tending to the spiritual needs of a growing minority. When Mark Baker, the pastor of Kanab s Southern First Baptist Church, decided to accept the calling to Utah, some of his fellow' pastors back east told him he was crazy. Any doubts those sentiments may have given him have been laid to rest by the reception he and his family have received here. I really enjoy it here, he says. "Weve been well accepted by the community. People have been super nice and wanting to help in any way they can. Originally from Evansville, Indiana, Baker attended Clear Creek Baptist College in Pineville, Kentucky. There he Bible major took a three-yea- r and graduated as an ordained minister in 1980. But by the time he graduated, he already had put in a few years ministering to Christian congregations in Kentucky. Following his graduation and Baker became ordination, pastor of a church in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, where he stayed for almost two years. He says that even though he was happy in his position in Kentucky, he began to feel a need to relocate. He was looking through a booklet published by the church which listed all the locations served by them. He felt impressed to send resumes to three places inquiring about open pastorships so he began checking on Hawaii, New Jersey and, of all places, Richfield, Utah. About three weeks later, he received a letter from Kanab asking if he might be interested in accepting a call here. He flew out to take a look and realized immediately that this was the place he was needed. Baker moved his family out here and says, "Its home to us. Mark met his wife, Cathy, in high Three bedroom, Two bedroom, Two bedroom, 1 1 in back Evansville. They have two daughters, Tracy, who is 10, and Kristine, 7. He says the girls enjoy Kanab and the friends they have found at school. Of his wife, Baker says, "Shes a strong point for me. He explains that she helped put him through college and then adds, She did without a lot of things so we could do the Lords work. A lively and enthusiastic young man, Baker seems to glow when he gets to talking about whats going on in his church. He believes that social activities are the cement that binds church members together. He especially feels that each age group needs to have some of its own activities and that the fellowship gained in them will help build friendships both within and outside the congregation. He places special emphasis on his ministry with the youth. They are the church of the future, he says. And as the church of the future, they may just be the most important people in the church. Much of Bakers philosophy reflects a feeling of ecumenism and sometimes its hard to decide whether hes talking only about his own church or others, as well. Young like to he says, people, thinlo their Spiritual leaders -Pastor, Bishop, whatever -really care about them. We need to get to know them. REDCARPET-Precisio- RED CARPET school Realty n ARIZ.
