Swallow reported that the State Fire Marshall and Farmers Home Administration are in the process of reviewing the plans and the board is hoping for approval very soon. The board will call for bids as soon as those approvals are received and hope to do that and if that by date holds, construction could begin in March or April. On the new Kanab school, plans have been pretty well refined with that facility being planned for a middle school at present with the idea of making it into a high school at a later date. The district is Commission Considers What To Do With Old Courthouse feeling that the old structure should be tom down. They report that its condition is such that it would take far too much money to remodel it to a useable state. Also, the new building will look nicer with the older one removed. One of the top subjects at the most recent Kane County Commission meeting was the disposition of the present (soon to become "old) courthouse building. The commission is of the WHATS ITS FUTURE - The future of the old shown Kanab here is uncertain at this courthouse will move time. The county their offices into a new building in the next few days and the county in However, the commission is desirous that county residents have some input and say as to what happens to the old structure, and with that in mind they have set a period for receiving comments about the old courthouse. 30-da- y County citizens are urged to make their feelings known. At the commission Dec. 29 meeting the commissioners discussed the new courthouse and the progress on it, along with the anticipated date for occupying it. The date set now for the move into the courthouse is Jan. 19, but Commissioner Esther Heaton is a little doubtful that that date will be made, thinking that Feb. 1 looks more practical. In other business at their Dec. 29 meeting, the commission was introduced to Dr. Bud Chadwell, the new pyschologist for Family Services, by Steve Baron. Mr. Baron stated that he will be working with Garfield and Kane County. The Commission awarded the public defender contract to Scott Thorley of Cedar City for a total services bid of $12,000, on a motion by Commissioner Heaton, Commissioner Calvin Johnson abstained, and Commissioners Bob Russell and Heaton voted yes. Attorney Heaton discussed a letter received from Social Services concerning incentive payments for child support court actions. Commissioner Johnson made a motion to sign the agreement, seconded by Commissioner Heaton. The commission discussed a proposed EMT Communica- waiting for tentative approval from the state and at present soil testing on the property is being conducted. The board made a motion to pay the architect on the Valley project. There is still some controversy concerning the present athletic schedules within the region and a meeting is planned with coaches and others to make recommendations. Supt. Swallow reports that there are strong differences of opinion concerning the programs even among coaches and administrators and more discussion is anticipated. Those favoring the present scheduling, which sees Jr. Varsity, Girls, and Varsity basketball all being played the same day and stretching over almost a full day, when travel is considered, feel that it is one to elevate the girls programs, cuts travel and also cuts time out of classes for students. They also feel that it is hard for those who remain in classes to get much done when others are gone at many different times. Those opposed to the present scheduling feel that it does not have that much effect in any of the ways mentioned by the proponents. Those who still have a wait and see attitude, feel it is good in theory and are willing to give it a trial period. In other business the board voted to purchase a new 84 passenger bus. It will be secured from Bryson Sales and Service and will be a Blue Bird bus, costing $43,192. It meets all federal, state and local standards.
