Show Chamber Concerned With Airport Lease ewA 000 presentation to the Kane Area Chamber of County Commerce Tuesday showed the importance of air travel to the economy of individuals, companies and communities. This subject was of particular interest to the Chamber inasmuch as the Kanab Airport at the present time does not have a flying service available. It was pointed out that there is an attendant at the airport and services are available to airplanes, but there is no service here to A ern Something for Kanab, Utah 84741 Thursday, May 1, 1980 Volume 48 Number 40 Single Copy Everyone 20c Kane County Population Will Reach 9,000 By Year 2,000 Kane County population will reach 9,000 by the year 2000, representing an increase from of 4,4CK), or 95.7 estimated 1980 totals. This prediction was contained in a research repoH prepared by Utah Foundation, the private research organization, and is based in part on projections made by the State Planning Office. According to the statistics gathered by the Foundation, Kane County is second highest in percentage change during the period. The 95.7 increase in Kane County is behind Davis with a and ahead projected 106.3 of Morgan County with 1980-200- period. As a result, the Planning Office projections are higher in the earlier years, but the Foundation projections ends up slightly higher for the year 2000. The report indicates that there will be an increase of more than a half million persons in Utahs normal ) brackets working-agbetween 1980 and the year 2000. Approximately 445,000 (20-64- e jobs must be created during this period in order to accommodate this expected population increase. During the past ten years, employment in Utah rose by nearly 210,000 jobs, with the private sector acof the counting for 87 increase. Government emof ployment made up 28 Utah nonagricultural employin ment in 1970 and 22.5 Population growth throughthe United States has tapered off during recent years, but Utah is experiencing the greatest growth in its history. Between 1970 and 1979, Utah's resident population rose by 308,000, or Utahs growth rate during this nine-yea- r was 3'i period times the U.S. average, and was exceeded by only five other states. out 29. Foundation analysts point one of the major factors in Utahs rapid growth is a birth rate that is highest in the nation and nearly twice the U.S. average. Several potential developments such as the MX deployment system, the Intermountain Power Project, synthetic fuel processing, etc., could raise these state totals by another 7Vi While both the Foundation and the Planning Office reports indicate that Utahs population will exceed 2 Vi. million by the year 2000, the Planning Office projections forecast a rapid growth in the earlier years and a gradual slowing down toward the turn of the century. The accident occurred Sunday evening at 9:27 about 10 miles west of Fredonia. Killed in the accident was Gail McFee of Santa Gara. Receiving minor injuried in the wreck were Ramona Bushhead of Moccasin and Evelina Drye of Santa Gara. When the call for an ambulance came into the Fredonia Marshals office, it was indicated that there were three critically injured people. Since the Fredonia ambulance can only handle two people comfortably, Marshal Tom Leighty asked the Kanab Gty ambulance service for assistance. The accident, involving a 1970 Chevrolet pickup, took place about 10 miles west of Fredonia at two Mile Wash on Highway 389. The pickup had left the highway, slid about 300 feet broadside, then A one-ca- r Filing Deadline May 10; No Response 1980. new overturned one and half times coming to rest on its side. UP&L Works For Purchase V'S A A ,1 - 5 1 ZttzLr-m- Celebrate Golden Wedding Kanab Couple To Be Honored on 50th Grant and Effie Robinson of Kanab will be honored by their child and grandchildren on the occasion of their fiftieth wedding anniversary on May 2 at an open house from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kanab Elementary School. Everyone is invited to attend. The Robinsons were mar ried May 2, 1930, the marriage being later solemnized on May 23, 1923 in the Salt Lake UlS Temple. They have one child, seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Grant has been in the cattle and tourist business most of his life and Effie taught school in the Kanab area for 26 years. Black Powder Shoot About 25 black powder shooters were in the Kanab area over the weekend for a shoot at Jim Anderson's Jimbos Chuckwagon, east of Kanab. The shooters, coming from Las Vegas, Cedar City, St. George. Mt. Trumbull, Nephi and Pleasant Grove enjoyed 18 different types of shoots. They were also treated to a e by Jim and his bar-b-cu- family. Several of the shooters put up tents and teepees and stayed a day or two. Among the other activities they enjoyed were tomahawk throwing and knife throwing, as well as mountain man trading. Jim hopes to get more interest in black powder locally and feels this activity was a great success. This condition of the lease had been extended several times and finally the city has not renewed the lease and other complications with employees at the airport has led to the present lack of services. Mayor Claud Glazier said the city has some negotiations in the null for a new manager. Utah Power & Light announced Tuesday morning that it and CP National have filed joint applications with the Utah Public Service Commission and Arizona Corporation Commission in which Utah Power & Light seeks approval to purchase CP Nationals utility property in Uah and Arizona. The application included a both contract by signed companies and approved by the boards of directors in which Utah Power & Light agrees to purchase CP Nationals utility property and electrical operating rights in southern Utah and northern Arizona for approximately $20 million. CP National serves some 10,000 customers in Utahs Kane, Washington and Iron counties and in Fredonia. Arizona. Men from ages 18 and up are eligible to participate. Entry fee is $15. Practices are beginning at present with drafts to be held after the May 2 deadline. The season is scheduled to begin May 20. Cuthbert, a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints, will speak at the Kanab Utah Stake Conference which will be held in Kanab and Orderville this weekend. Conference sessions will be under the direction of the Kanab Utah Stake Presidency President Valton E. with Jackson presiding. A leadership session will be held Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. to which all Stake and Ward Priesthood leadership is to invited and expected attend. An evening session the same day will begin at 7 p.m. This meeting is for all adult members of the Stake. The general sessions on Sunday will be held at 10 a.m. in Kanab at the Stake Center and at 2 p.m. in the Orderville Ward Chapel. Elder Cuthbert is expected to speak at each of these sessions. Elder Cuthbert was named to the First Quorum of the Seventy on April 1, 197g. He y recently served as president of the Scotland Edinburgh Mission for the Church. Before his call as mission in 1975.
