Program, Careers new name - Coconino County Educational Services Project - has been selected for the Coconino County Career Vocational Education Project. The Project has expanded its services and outgrown its old A name. There have been two additions to the professional staff who will assist in delivering the additional services. One is a Career Information Resource Center (CIRC) planner, Ms. Billie Hughes. The other is Ms. Sybil Smith, Placement Services Coordinator. Ms. Smith is helping high schools in setting up individual placement systems. Also a media Aide, Ms. Kathy Nation, has been employed to improve the media services of the Project. CIRC began when a group of concerned citizens started looking for some answers to the occupational and educational questions. They want to know (1) what kind of skills students need to get jobs in Coconino County and (2) what training programs are available to help students make career choices which are consistent with job availability. In answering these questions, CIRC will identify the competencies needed in the job market, identify compet- encies being developed in training programs, identify the discrepancy between the existing and the needed competencies, and identify the employment outlook. The goal of CIRC is to develop an information bank that will provide data to a variety of community members to aid in occupational and educational decision making. The intent is to facilitate the decision making process so that the discrepancy between supply and demand in the labor market may be effectively reduced. CIRC is the vehicle through which business, industry, community planners and educators can work together to the benefit of the entire community. For CIRC to be effective, it the aid of Karen Alvey, Kane Bob County Job Service, West, Chamber of Commerce President; Barbara Kimball, City of Fredonia; and Charlie Glaspie to aid in developing the goals of the CIRC project. As a Career Information Resource Center first step, labor market information will be gathered for the proposed data bank. All employers in the northwestern labor market area will be contacted and asked to fill out a CIRC Employer Questionnaire. This questionnaire will provide information describing the local job market. Permission has been given by Superintendent Swallow to have Kanab High School students participate in data gathering. Gassfoom analysis of the local labor market will provide a learning experience and also give the students a preview of career choices available in Kane and Coconino counties at the present time. Funding will also be requested to CETA provide for a part-tim- e person who would continue the data gathering process to keep the CIRC data bank information current. CIRC is one step in a process that could enable education to respond to verified community and individual needs. It will be a data bank from which policymakers and individuals can base decisions. It will provide current data on projected job availability, training pro- grams and skill requirements for various occupations. It has the potential to develop into a more comprehensive system that could include career guidance and job placement services. Its current mission, however, is to gather data that will identify the training needs of the county so that programs can be planned to meet existing needs. Valley High School News Sherrill W. and Kerol Young Neville began their move to Kanab in 1976 when they bought the Madge C. L. Workman property from their old friends, James and JoAnn Bean of Fredonia. At that time Sherrill was working full time for the U.S. Department of Labor in their Kansas City Regional Office. He transferred to Washington D.C. in 1977. The Workman property was sold when the old Ray B. Young home (where Kerol Young grew up) was available. They bought it from Dave and Darlene Marshall, who had extensively remodeled and improved it. The home was rented to the Higleys until A1 and Pegs Kanawood home was finished. Sherrill has been working part time as an economist with the Bureau of Labor Statistics in Washington D.C., traveling extensively to their Regional Offices and to State Labor Departments. Before his Federal employment, he worked for 32 years as Chief Statistician for the Utah Department of Employment Security (now known as the "Job Service) and contributed significantly to Utahs industrial development and labor laws during that time. The last day of work for the Nevilles in Washington D.C was February 29, 1980. He and Kerol look forward to Spring, Summer and Autumn in Kanabs dry, clean climite. (The Nevilles have spent four consecutive Winters in Kanab, they think each one has been wetter than the last.) They says they will enjoy working with other residents to promote the unique advantages of the area for happy living. Valley completed its basketball season with a flourish in a very exciting game Saturday, March 8, as ye met Park City, the number one rated team in the state, in a close game which we lost by only one point. Proud fans report that this was our best game of the year, with Wayne Jones as our high scorer, with 26 points, his high for the season. Derek Lamb and Shane Esplin each made ten points, and the other boys all played the very best game they have played all year. We were disappointed to lose by such a small margin, but proud to know our boys fought hard and played a good game. In order to qualify for the Park City game, we played Panguitch at SUSC the preceding Tuesday and defeated them Wayne Jones was high scorer in that game also, with 15 points. Valley is involved in other things than basketball this week. On Monday and Tuesday we participated in the Region 12 speech meet at Dixie, and our debators, orations, extempos, impromptus and our legislative forum all did well. We at Valley want to welcome back a former student, Allen Christian, who checked back into our school Friday, March 7. Next big event at Valley will be March 20 and 21, when our 7th, 8th and 9th grades and chorus are going to present the musical Buttonnose. There will be a different cast each night and it should be quite enjoyable. 50-4- FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH 200 East 400 South Sunday School Morning Worship Evening Service Wed., Prayer and Bible Study 9:45 a.m 11:00a.m. 6:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. is necessary to organize Coconino County i into Labor Market Areas and develop personalized programs which will meet the needs of each individual labor market area.. Ill have to talk to him about that; anyway, weve had some storm and some nice sunny days and some cold wintry days; weve had a little bit of everything this week here in the Valley so that should please just about everyone.
