Show Page Nina - May 10, 1979 SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS May 10, 1979 - Page Nine Fredonia High School News After a few weeks of dry spell Fredonia High is back and we have lots of activities to report. Our big news is the studentbody election that was held last month. We have a new constitution at the school which created several new elective and appointive positions for students. We will have Associated Men Students and Associated Women Students organizations and Dave Jackson and Bre la Heaton were elected to serve as presidents for 1979-8Merlin Figgins was elected Studentbody President, Don-n- y Johnson, n Gini Heaton, Secretary; Yearbook Editor; Adair, and SuTanna Bundy, Newspaper Editor. Merlin will have to appoint a fiscal officer, calendaring officer and three Supreme Court Judges in the fall. These nominations will be ratified by the new Student Senate. All in all, we are looking forward to a big year at FHS. After the district track meet in Ashfork last Saturday (in which our school took second place) we have several students who will go to State in Glendale. The boys are Brad Griffiths, Billy Carman, Randy Griffiths, and Ladd Brooksby. The girls making the trip are Vernetta Yellowhorse, Kathy Simpson, Connie Early, Judd and Trena Heaton. Good luck to everyone. The Seniors are on their last lap too, but their race is to Mexico. They have a beautiful 0. Cheryl took third place In the race. t; De-An- Local Schools Participate In Region , BYU Meets Track and field enthusiasts from local high schools participated in the Region Eight Track and Field Meet in St. George Wednesday, May 2, and were among the winners of the meet. Kanab boys finished fifth in the competition led by Kris Glover who captured two first places. Glover won first place in the 120 yard high hurdles, finishing the race in 15.5 seconds, just one tenth of a second behind the region record. In the 330 intermediate hurdles, Kris took first place with a time of 41.13. This time in the intermediates represents a new region record for Kris. Derek Lamb of Valley High School took first place in the 880 yard run with a time of 2:04.08, and Ben Johnson of Kanab came in fifth in that race. Dereks time in the 880 set a new region record. Gary Turpen took a fifth place in the 220 yard dash for Kanab. Robert Brown brought home a first place in the shot put with a heave of 47-- 6 (his best for the year) and Mike Skaggs took third in the same event. Brown also won fourth place in the discus throw. In the girls side of the Region track meet, Kanab placed three in the 110 yard hurdles: Loretta Garkson took second, Lori Wattier fifth and Lila Rae Swapp alternate. Lynette Maxwell of Valley took a second place in the mile run, and also placed fourth in the 880 yard run. Cheryl Lamb of Valley took third place in the 880 yard run. Kanabs 440 yard relay team took first place with a Half-Tim- Secretary e (Four hours per 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for 12 months per year) Requirements: Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent G.E.D. and one year Sign Painting by Jack Norton Call 6482417 Orderville, Utah time of 55.1. Running it were Cindy Robertson, Loretta Clarkson, Jannette Broadhead and Kanani Brown. Dena Willis placed third in Vi the shot put with a inch toss. Lynette Maxwell of Valley and Lori Wattier of Kanab placed third and fourth in the long jump respectively, and Diane Turpen took third place in the high jump. Some of these students participated in the BYU Invitational Track and Field Meet Friday and Saturday. Derek Lamb took first place in his specialty, the 880, and Lynette Maxwell set a new state record in the mile run, shaving 15 seconds off the old record. She ran it in 5:44, the old recording being 5:59. Kris Glover took first in the 120 hurdles and fifth in the paid practical office experience desired. Kanab News Notes Natalie Manson and Nita Franklin, students at Dixie College, were in Kanab last weekend; Natalie visiting with her grandmother, Mrs. McAllister, and Nita at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Franklin. Mr. and Mrs. George Kirby and Jessalyn Swapp went to Page last week to help Sandra Currey celebrate her birthday. While the gals enjoyed a needs. luncheon, George enjoyed some golfing. Steve and Charlene Green-halg- h were here visiting relatives and friends over the weekend. They attend school at SUSC. Mrs. Veloice Cox and family enjoyed a visit with her sister Lasca and husband from their home in Orem this week. The Alton Pughs traveled to Blanding, Utah the weekend of April 29 to attend and assist in the baptismal and confirmation of their grandson Michael D. Roberts, son of Bill and LaVerl Roberts and the blessing of another grandson, Alton Riley Pugh, son of Sam and Mary Ann Pugh. Also, May 5, they were at Page, Arizona assisting with the baptism and confirmation of a granddaughter, JaQuel Bunting, daughter of Merrill and RGene Bunting. the Seniors by everyone in both Fredonia and Kanab. We have had a busy year but a good one. Good luck to all of the girls trying out for cheerleader. Tryouts will be held today in the gym. Last years cheerleaders are in charge and they tell us that over twenty girls are planning to try for the seven positions on Varsity and Junior Varsity squads. We hope the best ladies win and everyone has a good time. 0000330 On May 3rd the band presented their Spring Concert. The students looked very CLASSY in their new uniforms and played just as well. At the Region Track meet Wednesday, May 2nd, new region records were set by Derek Lamb and Cheryl Lamb in the 880 and Lynnette Maxwell in the mile. Lynnette also goes to state in the 880 and long jump. On Friday, May 4, these three students attended an Invitational Track Meet at BYU and Lynnette broke a state record. She ran the mile in 5:44 and the record was 5:59. Valleys annual Spring Social was held on the 4th in Zion. It was a whole lot of fun. We spent the whole day in Zion. Everyone went hiking in the morning. We ate at noon and after lunch there was a waterfight. The waterfight was the most fun. Some of the nights was held Wednesday, May 9. Two plays and a lot of good material were presented for everyone to enjoy. The Junior High English classes really worked hard to put this over well. The second of the two nights will be on Wednesday, May 16. Everyone come and enjoy the work these students are doing. Youll really be missing out if you dont. is scheduled to take place Friday afternoon. All of the students will pitch in and help clean up the building and get it ready for next year, and the Seniors will paint their number on the hill. There will be a slave sale just before lunch and a dance in the evening. The Senior Trip will be next The Seniors week, May are looking forward to going but are wondering if they will be able to get gas. It will be a lot of fun for them though and one of the highlights of the Senioi year. 15-1- third place. (formerly Burning Market) Relatives here were happy to have a visit from Mr. and Mrs. R.L. (Lavon) MacGookin of California several days the past week. Lavon is a sister to James and Horace Maxwell of Glendale. Grandfather Charles C. Anderson had the privilege of having two grandchildren get married on the same day, May 4th. They were Miss Naomi Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Anderson of Tempe, Arizona, married Robert Grant, and Kent C. Anderson, son of Mr. and Carrots 2 bags 29 lbs. Oranges 4$100 Mrs. Kent S. Anderson, Glendale, married Verene well attended and the young couples were honored with many nice gifts. Mr. LDean Anderson took his father Charles C. Anderson and sister, Rose Marie Mackelprang of Fredonia to Tempe for the reception of Naomi and Robert. Receptions were held support that has been given that same evening, both were literary 6 months interest on Cal and Rita Gow returned this week from Salt Lake City where he underwent major surgery. They came home just in time to greet their son, Bill, his wife, Lynn, with their twins, also a daughter Sharon. This was a very happy homecoming for the Gows. George and Phylis Bridges went to Circleville Friday to attend the funeral services of her cousin, Marie Crane. Most of the people from our Ward enjoyed the very special Stake Conference held Saturday and Sunday and received inspiration which will be very applicable in their future lives. Malcolm Robinson enjoyed a visit this week with his daughter Ileena Holyoak and her son Kerry from their home in Wichita, Kansas. Kerry was returning home from Ricks College where he has been in school the past winter. His mother flew to Utah to return home with him and visit relatives through the state. Mrs. Geneva Workman spent the past week at the St. George Temple, representing our Ward.
