Show Thursday, February 9, 1967 SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS, Kanab, Utah Page The Sound Has Ended But The Memories Linger On by Marlin Brown The old power plant just across the city ditch on first east is quiet. Not a window does it rattle, nor docs it shake the ground as it did in days gone by. No, now it is silent forever, I guess. Maybe there wont be very many people who will miss its noise and maybe there will be many who are glad it has been silenced. I personally view its demise with a lump in but then I have many more memmy throat ories locked inside its silent walls than most of the local citizenry. And although it may not mean much to many, I would like to disclose some of ,he things that I remember about this place which is in the process of being removed. How well I remember as a small lad on a cold, snowy, wintery night running to the plant to watch and help my Dad as he would pop us some corn over the red hot coals in the old potbellied stove in the little cabin out back. When he was on duty 24 hours a day he used to sleep out there sometimes and whenever the phone rang he had to run out back to the cabin to answer it. And when we boys and our friends, who couldn't afford a ticket to the races, would sit atop that old cabin and watch the horses pound the turf around the east turn of the race track. Do you remember those burnouts like I do? When the smoke and fire poured out of the stacks, if at night, lighting the area up for blocks t around, or spouting off a big black high into the sky? Can you remember sitting home at all except nights reading when all was quiet the constant rattling of one of the windows? I do. I think we must have had a paper wedge placed in every window in the house. do-nu- Oh, the rattling was ok, we got used to that, but boy, when the power went off the silence was deafening, and Dad would streak out of the bouse on the dead run and high jump the fence, which was higher than I was, on his way to the plant to get the engine before it stopped running. Jay Lamb, our neighbor across the way, whom I used to foot race with, often said how, when he heard the plant go off, he would run out of the house as fast as he could and get to the street just in time to see Gurnsey rounding the corner in his dash to the plant. And, I remember how sometimes the power would go off when something important was about to happen - when an operation at the hospital was pending, or a basketball game was about to begin. How feverishly those men would work in order to get the power back in the lines. I remember how tourists used to walk up to the plant to see what that was that was keeping us awake. I remember playing around the beautiful rock garden in the middle of the verdent green lawn, and how we enjoyed lying on that lawn on a warm summer night, looking up at the millions of stars across the wide expanse of black sky as the ground vibrated beneath, and when wed see a shooting star, wed shout, money, money, money 'fore the weeks over! To many its passing will mean little, for it meant little to them in life. And for me, Im not sorry to see it go as progress marches forward, for in my mind's eye the power plant just across the city ditch on first east a shrine of wonderwill always Ik there ful memories.
