But, of course they was another person at the dug-ou- t when Whitmore and McIntyre were killed. The small bits of information we have are too detailed to be otherwise: the two men left in the morning saying that they would be back for dinner, they were going out onto the range to hunt horses, Whitmores sheep were driven off after the two men had left the dug-out- . There must have been a third person in the dugout the 8th of January, 1966 for these facts, written into military dispatches soon after the killings, to be known. The Kane County Daughters of Utah Pioneers History of Kane County carries the story further on page 8. The boy had a friendly Paiute Indian report the killings to Militia authorities, who sent two Kanab men to Dixie to secure' reinforcements to fight the Navajos and to find Whitmore and McIntyre. Probably, the boy was taken to Dixie by the Alexanders. He is not mentioned in the records again. One of the questions posed to us by these facts is: who was the boy? Just knowing his name might be important. Possibly he left in writing an account of the time he spent at the dugout. If so this would help us in present- ing our story of Mormon pioneer history to our visitors. Is there a reader of the Southern Utah News who knows anything about the boy and will help us? BY ORDER OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF KANAB CITY THIS 9th DAY OF AUGUST, A a, 1966. Lula Robinson, Clerk Alien Hews Holes end Current Events tend to be progressive. All conservative Republicans lament the fact that we have an overly strong central government in Washington that appears to be "laying awake nights" figuring out new ways to encroach on individual freedom, break down the sovereignty of the states and reward idleness with bigger and " better Big, paternalistic government has come about for several reasons but one leading cause is the failure of local governments to justly solve the problems of their people. Kane County is as guilty as any in this respect. The best way to dilute the massive power of our central government in domestic affairs is to establish strong county government that can and will cope with their local problems properly. My main purpose as a county commissioner will be to develop a strong and efficient county government that can cope with our needs and not "pass the buck" to higher government or just watch and wait to see if things will straighten themselves out. Our resources must be developed and used. The county commission must openly court industrial investors. At the present time, there are several promising industrial possibilities in our county that need to be vigorously pursued. We must progress agriculturally, industrially and culturally at an accelerated pace simply to avoid becoming a "pocket of poverty" that will attract droves of federal planners. We must create real and substantial opportunities for our young people because the exodus of our youth (a process that is well on the way) will cut the heart right out of our economy. It is only through economic development that average family incomes can keep pace with increased living costs. There cannot be a status quo in this respect. All county officers must be mindful of their legal duties and responsibilities to the people. The commissioners " must Iiot allow through their control of the elected officials to use their office in petty personal squabbles or for their own personal advantage. There must be better working relationships between the county government and the various municipalities. Progress for both could be greatly enhanced by the mere fact of cooperation. If we are progressive in our local affairs, fellow Republicans, we can then afford to be conservative in national matters. But to be conservative in both is unrealistically "putting on the dog."
