For fifty years this organization has held custody of the finest scenery and historical areas of the United States. It has been the job of the National Park Service to protect and interpret these areas to the people of the United States and visitors to this country. We at Pipe Springs National Monument are proud to be part of this Service, and to protect and Interpret the Monument, which is the only Monument In Park Service where ge National history is the prime interest One of the things we do at the Monument is collect information about the history of events at Pipe Springs, One of the problems that has come up in collecting this Information concerns a boy who was at Pipe Springs in 1866. The story begins years ago last fall. In 1865, when the Navajo Indians raided Kanab for the first time. The Navajos had to find food for their starving families. Almost a month later, in January of 1866, Navajos raided the Arizona Strip. James M. Whitmore, who owned Pipe Springs, and his herder Robert McIntyre were killed. At the time both men were living at Whitmores dug-oat Pipe Spring. Since the time of these killings it has been generally believed that there was a third person, usually believed to be a boy, in the dugout at the time. Some accounts say the boy was the son of Wliitmore. But there is no direct evidence. There is only the faint memories of oldtlmers and here say. But if there was a third person in the dugout it is our business to know. As time has permitted, we have tried to find more definite evidence so as to better interpret the Monu-meto our visitors.
