We approve of this early morning! practice for at least hvo reasons: We believe that a school without a good band is seriously hampered in obtaining good school spirit, and thereby progress. Secondly we believe that from our own experiences many in the morning years past, that to get youngsters out early and helps them start the gives them a little more pep and go, is only natural which day better after playing a marching tune, to human nature. While we are on tlvfc subject of progress and encouragement we believe that a mention of the fine work that Coach Louis Chatterley and his helpers are doing with our young athletes should not go unmentioned, or unnoticed. With the beginning of his second year at Kanab High School, Coach Chattrrlev appears to be making progress a little faster than would be the case with many new coaches. To build sound athletics in a school, which along with music is to our way of thinking, important in our youngsters life, can be done through the years by work and knowing the indi- The Important Question Kanab News Notes NOTICE OF LEASE 60-pie- vidual youngsters. The word progress is deceptive. It cannot be defined without qualifications. We cannot go backward, but at some point along the line we have lost something in our rush forward toward ever higher standards of living which demand a tremendous price. If we could have progress that retained some of the peacefulness, security, and traditions of the past we, would lead a more enjoyable existence. The change brought about by progress is illustrated by II. H. Bushnell of Wallowa, Oregon, in a description of the Oregon State Fair of a past generation. Said Mr. Bushnell: - Within easy walking distance from the main entrance, to the fair was a grove of oak trees and under the shade was Tent City, with streets laid out and defined lots, each capable of containing a tent. Shortly before the fair opened, families arrived in wagons from various sections of the Willamette Valley, and they unloaded cots and bedding, stoves and dishes, usually sufficient for camping out. Many of them were fair . . . Coming out of the fair grounds in the evening, one could see the white tents lit by kerosene lamps, the flies back, and hear the neighbors talking and laughing. Friends were invited ia to eat supper and discuss the judging and placing of awards. The Willamete Valley was inhabited by one big family and the fair was a family reunion. Of course we cant go back but there is something about Mr. Bushnells descriptions that stirs the memory of more carefree less crowding, speed, noise, costs, restrictions, laws, days regulations, taxes. Along with progress it is too bad to lose so many of the virtues of the past which were less conducive to heart failure and nervous breakdown. for any above-describe- Judd 4-27- Meat Is A Good Utah. Published October 8, 15, 22, 29, Club Jaycss-Eft- s Buy... Dont beef about prices! That engaging little headline fits a recent dispatch sent out by one of the press associations, it has to do with the fact, shown by the American Meat Institute, that meat is far cheaper than it was 40 years ago. This may seem like nonsense, but it isnt. Its true, of course, that the dollars and cents cost of a given amount of meat is far more than it was in that e era. But dont always tell an accurate story, and thats the case with meat The important thing is how much work we must do to earn enough money to buy something we want and judged by that yardstick meat is cheap. Here are the figures, as given by the Institute: Four decades ago the average worker had to put 42 Vi minutes at his job to earn the wherewithal for a pound of beef. Today it only takes him 23 minutes less than half as long. The institute says that constantly improving methods of production, marketing and retailing are keeping meat prices whenmcasured in terms of purchasing power at a bargain . long-gon- TIMBER FOR SALE, UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR Fast aarvica.
