Mace t ,f v': (Continued from last week) While the book drive was underway, Mrs. Jensen sent away by parcel post for the absolute necessities for classifying books. The essentials were the Dewey Decimal Classification, a few hundred catalog cards, and as many stickers. For an accession book, Mrs. Jensen says she used an old leather bound note book minus a few, pages. With these few essentials' she and Mrs. Hamblin took the books which had been collected, together with the family typewriter into an upstairs bedroom of her mothers home, moved out the bed, and there the Kanab Free Public Library was born. 4 pig Ve ; U S' . operated blowers for the filtered air system. The laws of Utah, provide In a small way for support or maintenance of public libraries by saying that a certain tax may be If vied for that purpose. In this way a small sum could be provided, but this did not come without effort, a town election was necessary before a special tax could be voted, it was also necessary to get the signatures of fifty taxpayers to affirm the annual tax levy, and a legal notice of the same on the next regular November ejection ballot. To get these signatures Mrs. Jensen and Mrs. Hamblin passed a petition at a basketball game and at other public meetings where any people of influence in the community gathered. In view of the fact that Kanab was rated high in wealth per capita, compared to other towns of the state, was of no value as revenue to this project as the livestock from which Its wealth was derived were run on Arizona ranges and the taxes were collected by that state. After the November 1914 election a library board was appointed by the town council, this board felt the need of moral support as well as financial backing if the project was to become permanent. For this purpose a number of towns women organized themselves Into ft club called the Ladies Literary ' League, ' thereby, to act as godmother to this infant undertaking. Their aim was to create interest and raise funds for the. support of the project until money from the special tax could be realized. Thus, in December 1914, the sum of forty six dollars, seventy five cents was raised for its support from the proceeds of dancing. eight dollars seventy-fiv- e cents of thi sum was derived Crom the sate, of punch. In January 1915, four dollars ten cents was raised from a benefit ball, twenty one dollars and thirty-fiv- e cents from a debate, all of which were sponsored by the Ladies Literary League.
