More than a hundred skaters from throughout the state as well as Idaho, Wyoming, Ohio and Texas gathered for the annual three-da- y event, starting Friday. They skated not to qualify for a higher level of competition, but for a dress rehearsal before the coming seasons qualifiers that can give them U.S. team status and eventually, the acclaim skaters such as Michelle Kwan have. While many players take time during the summer lull to further hone their skills at district camps or special training sessions, so do coaches and referees. And its getting bigger every year. District president Richard Messenger reported that, even with a loyal, hardworking staff, the job couldnt be done without the help of a small army of volunteers. Taking the gold in Saturdays top division, she is the first Utah skater in 14 years to achieve team status with the United States Figure Skating Association. The last Utah skater to do that was Bountifuls Holly Cook. Placing fourth in the Junior division at last years national championships brought Reed that status, and now she works towards making a name for herself among the best in the sport.
