Show Grantsville hammers Layton 'Bf BY ANDY CROW Clipper Sports Writer - LAYTON A lot of people say that baseball is a relatively boring sport. They say there is no excitement to the game. Tuesday evenings game between the Layton Lancers and Grantsville had all the excitement one could ask for a baseball game. In this case, the fireworks went off and had their grand finale all in the first inning of the 14-- 3 Grantsville victory in Layton. Grantsville immediately jumped out to a commanding 1 lead in the top of the first inning. They batted around the order twice in the inning and virtually each Grantsville hitter made a contribution to the opening lead. Grantsville leadoff man Jared Giles drew a leadoff walk to begin the onslaught. Brock Davis County Clipper SportsWeek Thursday, June 24, 2004 Boman followed with a double that scored Giles from second after he had stolen second. Craig Harrison was the next batter and he was hit by a pitch that moved Boman to second and I larrison down to first with nobody out. A fielder's choice followed that got Harrison out going to second but moved Boman on to third. An error by Liyton shortstop Sam Benton ended up scoring Boman from third and moving runners to the comers at first and third again with just one out. Green ran into his bad luck in the first also, as Grantsville tacked on three more before Green got the last out of the inning, and Layton was down 1 Nothing was shaking for the Lancers in the bottom of the first. Same could be said for both teams in their two second in the inning. Grantsville was shut out once again by Green in the top of the third when Layton got themselves on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. In the fifth, Jared Giles led off the inning with a double and moved onto third by virtue of a Green wild pitch. Giles then scored from third base on a beautifully executed out to second that ground went down in the scorebook as a fielder's choice. CJ Valencia got Layton right cushion back under that n in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single to center to make it 12-- 3 Grantsville going into the sixth inning. Sam Benton committed one of his two errors during the game in the sixth that kept the Grantsville rally going. Drake had advanced to second on a wild pitch when Benton made a throwing error to first that scored Drake all the way from second with one out. The third program, entitled summer recreation! is for the youth hockey experienced player. This program is two hours every other week. The first part of the session involves skating drills, then the kids pair off and actually scrimmage. It's something Worden calls structured mayhem. It's pure fun for the love of the game, he said. Once the players have honed their skills, it's time to actually suit up and compete in games during the fall. The DCYHA participates on two separate levels of competition. The recreation or house league is for beginning players, while the B league is a step up in competition. This is the first year they've competed in the B league, with players finally having enough experience and skill to make the jump. Of course, this tends to be quite expensive, which is another concern of parents teetering between football and soccer. The fees for the Bountiful district are $170, which go to a wide variety of uses. A good amount is for replacing equipment, uniforms, and field upkeep. Some items require only visual inspections, such as air filters, but other items need replacement at or near the end of their expected life spans. 1. 2. Timing belt replacements at recommended intervals for cars with engine interference timing belts If a timing belt breaks, some makes and models will result in major engine damage while other makes and models will merely stop running and nothing major will happen to the engine. In either case the engine will completely stop working and a tow truck will be required. You will be more inconvenienced than had this service been performed at an earlier time. Make sure you know when the belts need to be replaced and take care of replacing them timely. Make sure you know if your belt is an engine interference belt. Most shops have this information. 3. Transmission fluid flushed at intervals of 20,000 to 30,000 miles. Automatic transmissions should have the transmission fluid inspected, and if dirty, totally flushed, not merely drained and refilled, every 30,000 miles. There are three types of services on the market currently. Drain and refill (not recommended by professionals), the cooler line flushes (least Ralph Barlow 299-188- 1 recommended by professionals) and type of flushes (most recommended by professionals). Make sure if your car has a transmission filter, that it is changed at the same time, as a clogged filter can cause transmission failure. Also have your fluid visually inspected for signs of metal, indicating a degenerating transmission, as well as signs of discolored fluid, indicating excessive internal transmission wear, or viscosity breakdown. pump-inl- et These three areas of care can pro- long the life and increase the resale value of your car.
