Show Winners Ray, Oda, look to November BY MELINDA WILLIAMS Clipper Staff Writer Needless to say, both winners in the Davis County Republican party are thrilled with their victories and are eager to move toward the November General Election. Curt Odd and Paul Ray each won a place on the ballot in the November held Republican primary Tuesday Ray won over current Rep Dana C. Love, 1,555 to 1229 votes in District 13 and Curt Oda won in District 14, 865 to 515 votes over Cheryl Lynn Phipps. Ray, who serves on the Ginton City Council, was the 13 representative for District until 2000, when Love won his seat Now, hes looking forward to having the opportunity to serve his former constituents, and he said if he wins in November, it wall be like I never missed a day (in the legislature) He said he lobbied on behalf of Ginton City during the last legislative session and attended a good portion of it, so he feels he knows whats going on Oda, a Clearfield City council member, said of his victory, Im elated, absolutely elated He said his victory told him that his hard two things work paid off and that, the voters wanted someone who is qualified He too has spent a good deal of time at the state Capitol, attending an interim caucus meeting just last week He believes he has support from a good number ol legislators and a number of associathe Public tions. including Association Employees Speculation in the District 13 race was that Love's chances were hurt by a flier put out by her campaign workers. which misquoted fellow Rep Stuart Adamss support for Love. Loves campaign worked Monday night to call voters to correct the error. But Ray said he doesnt think the gaffe affected the campaigns outcome The last couple of days of the campaign it looked to us like we were up about 10 points, and thats about the margin we won by! he said. If elected, Oda would like to focus his work on economic and community development He believes his knowledge as a businessman will help m that area. Oda believes that in order for the states economy to grow we have to keep industries we have, while attracting industnes from outside the state Without building our economic development, there are a lot of issues which will be unfundable, he said, such as transportation and rebuilding the states aging infrastructure, as well as education Oda believes its time Utah got extremely creative in finding new ways to educate people We cant just keep putting more money into it all the time Ray wants to work toward keeping the states budget on track He said that last time he served m the legislature, they had to cut $258 million out of the states budget Hed like to work to streamline the budget, while properly funding needs He believes some $192 mil lion could be available lor education through the federal trust lands program and payment in lieu oi taxes which the federal government owes the stale for land it owns, and he said he will work to get that or cancer.org 8:30-6:0- - win.
