CARROLL Clipper Today Correspondent HILL AIR FORCE BASE -The 419th Support Group sent nearly 80 people to Japan for the last two weeks in October to assist USAF members stationed at Kadena Air Base. This deployment was unusual in that the Support Group deployed on its own as a entity Members of the been on past deployhave group ments to support the operational side of the 419th. but have not been on temporary duty as a group. The 419th Support Group is made up of Air Force reservists from civil engineering, security forces, personnel, communications, military equal opportunity and other units. The success of the temporary duty (TDY) was based on the num-- t ber of work orders completed and man-houexpended on projects, misrather than the typical 6 sions flown. The Hill reserve unit was immediately put to work when they arrived on the Japanese Island and provided assistance to the Kadena security forces and civil engineering squadron. Tech. Sgt. Mike Martinez, a 419th heavy equipment operator, said the entire trip went extremely well with no flight problems en route and perfect weather while they were in Japan. Kadena was backlogged on their projects so we were really appreciated," Martinez stated. Martinez and the other 419th civil engineers laid down a parking lot for weapons storage employees. Members of the security forces at Kadena were equally impressed with the 419th personnel. The Kadena airmen were grateful for the extra help at the base and for what they were able to learn from the Hill personnel who work in local Utah law enforcement agencies as civilians. Col. Gerald Yearsley. 419th Support Group commander, said the TDY provided benefits to Kadena Air Base while giving his people a unique opportunity to use their skills.
