Those schools include: the Jean Massieu School, Sandy; Sundance Mountain School. Sundance;The New Stewart School, Salt Lake City; Tuacahn High School for the Performing Arts, Ivins; Unitah River 'Alternative High School, Fort Pinnacle Duchesne; Canyon Academy. Price; CBA Center. Delta; and Success School, Salt Lake City. SEPTEMBER 10 FRIDAY EVENING Collectively, they recently received a $500,000 boost from the U.S. Department of Education. Larry Horyna. with the State Department of Education said the money, part of $41 million awarded charter schools this year nationwide, will be used to get those schools off to a good start. Were only allowed eight by law and we have them! he said. There won't be any additional charter schools begun in the near future. Consequently there isn't a charter . . school in Davis County. Charter school are public schools operating with a contract or charter from a public agency. They are created by groups of parents, teachers, school administrators, or others who want to provide alternatives within the public school system. Because they are public schools, they are free, open to all and designed to be publicly accountable and responsive to the needs of parents and children. and They must be abide by civil rights, health and safety laws. They must also meet standards set forth in their charters. The $41 million was awarded to 19 states, including Utah, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico to fund the first year of three year grants to sup- (6 05) , "Sixteen Candles" (1984, Comedy) 1(8 20) Pretty in Pink" (1986) and development of port start-u- p charter schools. In addition, more than $54 million will support schools in 13 additional states that are receiving "their second or third year funding. With this step, well help raise standards, raise expectations and raise 'accountability, by having public schools that are free to create, to innovate and be held accountable, said President Bill Clinton in announcing the funding. of Education Department Secretary Richard Riley, said charter ? schools offer more choices in the kinds of public education available. Its clear that charter schools are the right , ! ; public school option for an increasing number of students. There will be more than 1,700 char- ter schools expected to operate this year nationwide, more than halfway to Clinton's goal of establishing 3.000 charter schools by 2002. Davis County youngster plans 9th birthday party on 9-9-- 99 BY MELINDA WILLIAMS Clipper Staff Writer - Like most FARMINGTON Jdds Tyson Walker is excited for his minth birthday Thursday. He hopes to get a kayak, but isn't sure he'll get one. Dad Gyle said Tyson got to use one at scout camp last summer and really enjoyed it. But, winters coming and I don't know what he thinks he's going to do with it, Gyle said. While a lot of youngsters are turning 9, Tyson and his family are excited because his ninth birthday is on know there's a lot of other kids 'turning 9, but its significant to us because hell always remember those nine numerical birthdays;' Gyle said. Tyson is excited about his birthday and plans on going to Chuck E. Cheese with his friends to celebrate. Tyson was almost bom on September 8. Gyle tells the story that when his wife Suzi was pregnant, her .I doctor set an appointment for September 9 to induce labor. But the doctor called on the 8th, saying they could do it that day if Suzi wanted. I begged her not to; Gyle said. It was the day of the BYU-Miagame and Miami was number one that year. I asked her to wait and she agreed. Gyle went to the game and BYU won. It was only after Tyson was bom ;that the realized the significance of their sons birth. Gyle said it s ironic that three of ; their children have memorable birth ; dates.
