McDonald also appeared at SU last January and hia partner, Chudc Milligan, performed here last Se~ber. Although McDonald did basically the same show as last year, it was even better if only because it was under the stars. McDonald opened the show with a little background on hypn06ia. "We enter alttred statn all the time,• he said. He then demonstrated this ID the entire audience by having everyone dose their eye,, sttetth their ann.s out in front of them and concentrate as he guided them . through a scenario in which there was a heavy bucket in their right hand and a light helium balloon in their left hand. When ~ n e opened their eye, again. they saw that their left hand had moved upward and their right hand had moved down. •your state of mind creates mwcle response,• Mc.Donald explained. McDonald then aslced for volu~ from the audience and a hoard of ltlldenm rushed to the stage and quickly filled the chairs. After about 15 minutes of "hypnotic suggestion,• participants were •sleeping,• and many of them had f.illen out of their chairs or slumped aver onlD the petson next to them. Throughout the remainder of the show, McDonald singled out varioua participants and made them believe such things lilcc water tasted like cat pee, that they could smell a horrible (or good) odor ooming from their neighbor, that they were contestants in the Mr. World 1993 body building competition and that they were MC Hammer singing lw hit song •ean•r Touch This." He also used several •signals" such as clearing his throat, pulling his right ear and saying the word ·fun,• which made various voluntrcrs imagine thar their fly is down, hear their shoes talking or jump up and sing ·rm Po~ the Sailor and call out '"Olive Oyl, Olive Oyl, where fur art thou Olive Oy~" at which point •olive Oyl" would come running into his arms. Ar. one point, he suggestrd to liCYCral volunfl!ers that they were graceful ballerinas leaping and twirling across the stage. Acting the pan of the teacher, McDonald turned around and his ·students" pulled faczs, stood on their chairs and ptetended to throw things at him. As soon as be turned back around, the students immediately sat down and put on their most angelic smiles.
