BY HEATHER ANDERSON Thunderbird Sta.ff Writer SUU is planning to give English as a Second language (ESU srudents university credit. According to ESL Secretary Evelyn Nelson, the problem is they' re not sure how much credit to give. The program has been functioning now for two years. The main emphasis of the course is for non-English spe.ak.ing srudents to come to SUU and learn the language so they can take university classes. Nelson said, "we d id our homework, and other universities give credit." The credits students earn in the ESL program can apply towards their degree, General Education requirements, or be used for their electives. Nelson says it's very difficult for the students just learning English to take a lot of classes where everything said, as well as the reading material, is in English. A total of 10 students are currently in the ESL program. Nelson says that's "pretty small, we like to have 40-60.~ She says the number of students enrolled changes frequently, and the length of time a srudent stays is up to them. Many srudents come from Japan and Korea, but Nelson says that l 0 Brazilians will be coming, and in the summer a group from Indonesia will be coming fo r an English plus camping course. She says the added course is "extra incentive for students to come here, and once we get them here, we teach them." For students to be eligible for the ESL program, they must get 500 or better on the TOEFL (Test Of English as Foreign Language) exam. After ta.king a few ESL courses, the students are then tested for language proficiency. Nelson says this is to evaluate their progress in grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. · _.
