The 'Birds now move to 11-10 on the season and 6-2 against Big Sky opponents. SUU will have its hands full Sawrday night when it hosts 19-2 WisconsinMilwaukee in a 7:30 p.m. start in the Centrum. "l think it (EWU) was one of our best games. I think we played well and 1 think we were very unsdfish," said SUU Head C-oach Bill Evans. "It's amazing how well some of Richard Barton our kids would give the ball up in situations they knew that it was an unnecessary shot that we'd want them to take. That's a credit to their maturity. "There were a lot of time-early in the shot clock-that they could have shot the basketball, but we were trying to talcc a lime time and get the ball into the post I think they did a great job." Thunderbirds held a 11-5 lead and in the next four minutes the 'Biros hdd the Eagles scoreless and increased their lead from six to 14, at 19-5 with 12:08 to play in the opening half. The Thunderbirds eventually went up by as many as 16, but the Eagles whittled that Lead down to nine at 33-24 with 3:54 left. With 3:16 left, Barton tied and passed Mead with a pair of free throws. Southern Utah was up at the break 43-32. Andy Ward's three to open the half started the ' Birds on a 14-6 run and Barton bucket with 15:56 put SUU up 18 at 56-38. The 'Birds kept rolling and at the 3:34 mark they rook their biggest lead of 22 points at 84-62. During that time Ralph Squire scored eight straight points. Following Barton's 31 points and 11 boards, James lewis netted 17, while Ward scored 13 and Squire finished with 10. Barton now has 1,280, while Mead finished his career with 1,261. Davor Marcelic, who graduared last year, is the leading career scorer with 1,710. Pacific for four The SUU baseball team will try to take the momentum from its first win of the season and carry it over to the road this weekend when the hardballers face the University of Pacific for four games. After dropping eight games to open the season, the 'Birds pidc.ed up their first win Saturday against Utah in St. George. The win snapped a 32-game losing streak, stretching back to last season. Mickey Houston leads the way for the 'Birds at the plate, hitting .433 with 11 RBI and two four-baggers. On the mound. Shane Wilde leads the 'Birds with a 1-2 record, 191/3 innings and is tied for strikeouts with nine. The SUU women's basketball fell prey to the Lady Rebels of the University of Nevada las Vegas Tuesday night 84-62. SUU and UNLV both scored 37 points in the final 20 minutes, but the 22-point UNLV halftime lead accounted for the lopsided score. Freshman Cherri Shurtliff scored a team-high 18 points. She was followed by Angie Alvey with 10 points, while Holly Holt added nine points. SUU will finish up its home schedule tonight when it battles Boise State in the Centrum. team Alumni cagers return to play Two squads of former SUU basketball players will square off at the Centrum Saturday at 5 p.m. in a preliminary contest to the game pitting the Thunderbirds against WisconsinMilwaukee. "We've got players committed for the game from several eras," said Steve Lunt, assistant to the president for special projects. "Some of the players played at SUU clear back in the 1950s.• As part of halftime activities, participants will be recognized, and a group photo will be taken.
