Show THE THU NDERBIRD· SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY · TH U RSDAY, O CTO BER I, 1992 • PAG E 9 Debaters plan to win big • BY STEVE lAW Thunderbird Staff Writer Southern Utah University is well known for many thi ngs, but perhaps one of the most famous attributes is the SUU high-inten sity debate team. In the past the debate team has built a valued reputation as being one of the best debate teams in the nation. Suzanne Larson, the SUU debate coach, and the debate squad plan to build that reputation even more this year. Hopes and expectation are high, accord ing to Larson. This year the debate topic is the American welfare system. Throughout the season, debaters will have the opportunity to debate both sides of the issue, making it necessary for them to prepare both negative and positive cases on the subject. The debate season is based on the semester schedule rather than the quarter, and the season began last weekend with a scrimmage held at Utah State University_ The last tournament of the season will be held at the end of December, well after other SU students have gone home for the C hrisnnas holidays. During the fall season the debaters will attend eight tournaments. According to Larson, six of these meets are the hardest and most competitive in the nation. "We pick and choose the meets that will best suit the level of our team," Larson says, " and this year we are on a very competitive level. I tell my team that we' re out playing with the big boys." Larson strongly feels that this year's squad is already one of the best in the nation. "We could take the whole sha-bang," Larson says. "If not this year then next year." In the past, SUU has actively recruited the best debaters for the squad but lately the squad's reputation has preceded them. "We're very active in getting who we want," Larson stated. "This year the best searched us out." Larson believes that this reflects on the university's reputation of past achievements. This year, according to Larson the top returning debaters are Aimee Anderson , an All- American debater from Salt Lake, and Earl Bandy, a sophomore from Vernal, Utah. Other top debate teams for SUU are Jeff Larson, a junior from St. George and Shanna Morgan, a junior from Salt Lake. Senior T iffany Price is teamed up with last year's high school division J.A state champion Levi Heath from Cedar City. In February the squad will travel to the University of Kansas where they will compete with 50 of the top teams in the nation . A typical debate tournament lasts two and a half days. Driving time can, and often does, add up to another day. Larson adds that the long drives together in crowded vans helps to bond the team.
