I like to force myself into uncomfortable situations," she said. For the last year and-a-half, Staffanson has been the lead female vocalist in the local band C.C. Ryder. "Singing in the band forced me to have confidence in my singing voiceconfidence is the element. If you have confidence in yourself, you can do anything,' ' she said. Shanklin to replace Campbell BY DARIN GRAFF Thunderbird Correspondent Bart Shanklin, SUU choir director, will take over as head of the music department when current department head Hal Campbell retires this spring. Shanklin says he plans to lead the department in an upward fashion. "The quality of instruction we offer is going to increase, which will make the students better musicians, both in an academic sense and in their ability to perform. And that itself will translate into a better reputation for the music department," Shanklin said. Shanklin qualified as Campbell's replacement through the experience he gained in the South while teaching for five years at Blue Mountain College in northeast Mississippi and three years at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Before that, Shanklin taught high school until receiving his master's degree at Florida State University in 1978. Shanklin says he's fascinated with the West, enjoys Cedar City and plans to continue as a member of the music faculty at SUU. " One of the reasons why I came here is because (SUU] is on an upswing and is experiencing a great deal of growth in terms of student enrollment and also in terms of facilities. This is an excellent building... the facilities here are very fine ." r--------------------, l Single Express .Meal ! I $21?.U36 ! I I I Wendy's Single, Reg. Fries, 16 oz.
