Noted historian subject of Convo J uanita Brooks , noted Utah historian and author of The Mountain Meadow Massacre, is the subject of today's Convocation, presented by Levi Peterson . A p rofessor of English at W eber State University, Peterson has a strong interest in history and social issues. An accomplished author, he has published short stories, historical and biographical essa ys, collections of short stories and a well-received novel that is set in southern Utah. H e also has been the editor of Encyclia, the journal of the Utah Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was an interim editor of Westnn American Literature for one year. In writing Juanita Brooks: Mormon Woman Historian , he carefully researched and sensitively presented an interpretation of a woman who touched Utah profoundly with her work. H is lecture is titled " J uanita Brooks: An H istorian' s P urging of a Festering Wound." The final Convocation next week is the annual Academic Awards Convocation. The program honors SUU's outstanding scholars, recognizing academic excellence with awards for achievement. Awards will be given to the 1992 SUU valedictorian and outstanding scholars in each of the university's academ ic schools.
