The Thunderbird, SUU's student newspaper, won second place in general excellence from the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Media Association at the organization's 68th annual convention Thursday through Saturday in Gunnison , Colo. SUU's paper finished second to the University of Colorado from among the 32 four-year schools entered in the competition. Thunderbird journalists picked up five individual awards for work published during 1991 while the newspaper staff picked up three additional awards. Also, two students were honored in competition during the convention. Eric Roderick won first place for still life photography and third place for feature photography in live competition while Kathleen Clove won second place in n ewswriting. In published competition, The Thunderbird won first places in typography, layout and design, in single ad and in ad art. Roderick picked up second places in news photography and sports photography. Shely Mullennax won third place in news graphics, Sean Bennick third in ad art and Brian Howard third in sports column. SUU's Cable Channel 9 entered the limited mail-in competition for television news and from among three schools entered, grabbed two firsts and an honorable mention. First places went to Ken Peterson, Tauni Oxborrow and Michelle Mathews in news production , and to Kwin Peterson and G reg Millet in commentary/PSA/promo production. Honorable mention went to Kara Bowen in news performance. Thunderbird adviser Larry Baker was elected to the executive board of RMCMA, members of which hail from 14 western states. Baker will direct the live competition at the 1993 convention in Denver. Abeles' lecture, which includes a slide presentation of his works, will be in the Auditorium. H e is also the juror of the Cedar City Art Committee's 51st annual exhibition, which opens today and runs through May in the the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery. Born in New York City, N.Y., Abeles earned his master of fine arts degree at Columbia University and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture for two years. Abeles is an artist whose focus is the expressive psychological aspects of the human figure. His works are included in the collections of a number of prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, Mass., Dartmouth College and the Library of Congress. Abeles' lecture topic is ''The Responsibility of the Artist-Or Must Truth Be Offensive?" His appearance is sponsored by the Cedar City Art Committee and the SUU art department.
