Show IPAGE 8 UNIVERSITY JOURNAL OPINION MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2001 LETTERS Better drivers needed around the campus TO THE EDIT R: At thi · point in time, being a pede trian in a cro walk i hazardou co you r health -· esp ecially at tbe comer of 200 ouch and 300 West! Drivers are con entrating on traffic , turning left , m rging , they jog in the road , or dri. e st raight through on a busy treet . Often a line f ca r heading north are topp d eithe r for a pede trian or to turn left and a car pe ds by on the right with out h itation . Many ped e trian have narrowly mi d being bit by car with dri er who di regard , or are unaware of, the crosswalk and the rights of the ped trian . On the other hand , ome p d e trians walk out into the treet without regard to drivers though the crosswalk pro id ome rt of invisible hi Id . Bicycli t s also n ed to be reminded that they are required to observe the sam traffic laws everyone e e must obey. I have seen pedestrians ju t about get run over by om one on a bike wh goes around the right ide of a line of car waiting for p eople co cro in a cro walk. It would be a r al rvice to the univer icy community, a well · citizen at larg , to raise awarene of the problem . Thank you. a • ANDY BURT Jacque Mard1a0t COMMENTARY Let the band play on TO THE EDfTOR: T have been to many football games at many different coll ges during my lifetime. As an avid fan, I tend to notice the little things on , a nd off th e field . Many of the game 1 have attended had a pep band in tbe bleacher , a nd each of them yearned for their few minu~ to play. The band is a must for co llege footbaJI gam , a it provide pirit not only to the crowd , but also to th players. I find it ratb r disturbing that here at UU we ch to play the national anthem over the public add.re y t m , rather than al.low tb band , who are itting there holding th ir in ·t.rume11ts, play it. It forth r bathe.rs me that at breaks, between quarter , at halftime , and after the game th P.A. stem is playin music non top, OMPETING with the band. We here at should be proud to have a pep band who a tually takes tim out of their weekends to attend borne game . Their attendance i directly nece ary to the ucce of the football team , and bould not b ingnored, or om, d by whoever i running the P.A. tem! LET THE BAND PLAY!
