Show - !THURSDAY, MARCH l .2, 1001 UNIVERSITY JOURNAL CAMPUS NEWS 'NA Week' embraces language BY KIMBERLY SWENSON JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Southern Utah University's 24th annual Native e,merican Week titled "Embracin1 the Power of Native American Language" began yesterday and runs through March 31 . More than a dozen activities are planned for the celebration. Some events include the Miss Indian SUV pageant, Hopi and Zuni dancers, films, speakers, and a pow-wow on Fri9ay and Saturday to end the week's events. The Native American Week is sponsored by the SUU • Multicultural Center, Convocatlons, and the American Student Association. More than $8,000 was spent in preparations for the week's activities. 8ctensive planning has gone into this week to make the celebration multi-tribal. "We are trying to bring a 1qt more tribes in to make it multitribal and more diverse: ·said Tina Calamity, a multicultural counselor at the university. Tommy Seaton, a senior sociology major ·frorn Kayenta Ariz ., and president of the Native American Student Association at SUU , said the importance of the week is to · express our uniqueness, and w ill be a celebration of our uniqueness.• For students participating in the week's events, Native American Week credit is available by enrolling in History 2920 or 4920 . "It is a great way to get a credit in one week ," Calamity said. Students and the public are welcome to all eyents. Any questions can be answered by contacting the Multicultural Center.
