Show I. Pence denies association with lntemet controversy TO 1llE EDITOR: · There has been considerable discussion , controversy and misinformation urrounding the issue of restricting Jnternet acces on UU's campus. I am writing to clea r up an y misconceptions conce rning my part in th.is issue. It is rumored that r suggested to student Michaun Jensen chat she "stage " a iolati o n of UU's c urrent acceptable compute r u e r ' policy. Though I am unalterably opposed to censoring what students can explore, I did n ot in any way convince, coerce, man ipulate or e ncourage. M . Jensen to violate this policy. I am troubled chat whether the real point of contention -a poorly written , vague and probably unconstitutional limitation on student ' rights to engage in scientific inquiry. . Thi misguided fo cus on whether or n o t a student intentionally violated a university policy to highlight its weakness also patronize tudeot by assum ing they are unable to c o nduct legitimate cr itical inquiry on their own. This again re in fo rces one of th e most important subtexts of the entire . Intern e t acce s debate-that students are not yet fully aduJts and a re too irre ponsible and immature to dire~ and monitor their own be havior. If "learn.ing li ves forever ," implying that students at som point will direct their own life-long learning, now is the best time and place for them to tart Dan Pence C&O says article was one-sided TO TIIE EDITOR: The student senate and the Journal are in place on tbe SUU campus to e nric h the college experience ·of the tudents. We on the Club and Organizations (C&O) budg e t committee donate o ur time for this same purpose through allocating funds from our limited budget. As members of the budget c ommittee , we feel that the article · "Senate uspends club funding debate" from the Feb . 25 issue of the Journal was onesided in its coverage of the i s ue concerning our comminee. According to the writer and some senators, w e are "unfair and biased" in our allocation of funds .• The senate motioned that no more requests would be approved until we were "working under standardized bylaws. b Unfortunately, neither the senate nor the author of the article realized that all of o ur decis ion concerning the allocation of funds are based on criteria set forth in bylaws from th e Club and Organizations Manual. A copy of this manual was given to each club at the beginning of the year and can be readily attained in the ame student gove rnment office for review. We are disappointed that senators made defamatory statements about our committee and thejournal published them without doing any research to prove or disprove them. Majority needs to rule in community policies TO THE EDITOR: impressed the the Journal allowed Mr. Stewart to tell his ide of the story. This country is While we ' re making the majority comply with the a democracy and this campus is minority , I like horse turds for run in a democratic fashion . If you feel the policy is breakfast, fresh ones right out of a com fed mustang, aAd I want wrong, go to the senator that the cafeteria to start serving represents your department and them every morning so I can eat help them draw up an them while looking at the amendment to the policy or a newest is ue of Playboy that I new policy all together and have them propo e ic to the checked out from the library. I mean , come on, let's think proper authoritie . Better yet , about it . This is a public why not draw up several university and in the area the different usage policies and get public norm is that pornography them placed on the ballots in is not something that is th this year's coming election considered acceptable by the and have the student body vote majority. That's why it 's not on it. The voter turnout among readily available at the library. students has been lacking the Why should the majority be past few years and something made uncomfortable so that the this controversial may he the mrnority can do what they ticket to get a higher voter want? J feel every person should turnout. There are things that I don't be able to express the views and opinions, that' what makes our like about the Acceptable Use country great, but it is a Policy. For instance , I' m not democracy and when the very happy about the fact that maiority doesn ' t accept a someone can read my e-mail , person' s opinion or views then and I wish that I had more privacy. But if wishes were they shouldn't have to. I may be wrong, maybe the fishes we'd all have a fry and if horse turds were biscuits ... well, majority of this campus think that p ornography is acceptable we could all have breakfast in via the net. Well, if I am wrong, the cafeteria every morning. I' m not going to get then let's go about changing the ·everything I want, and I feel that policy as the adults that we are. Thi last attack on the use ii I am on a public server then policy left a bad taste in my the things that I so will b e mouth. It placed Mr. Stewart, public. That is a nece ary evil the lab assistant, in the role of so that the un iver ity can villain in a classic ~Damsel in l>rotect itself from lawsuits, etc., -Oistress b scenario, with him and that is the price I have to tying Ms. Jensen up and placing pay to attend a great university her on the tracks to be run over like UU. by the Acceptable Use Policy R. Chance Stewart Loco-motive . I was glad and should start subscribing to Penthouse and Play boy a.s.a.p . The last few editions of the Journal have had a lot in them a bout the "acceptabl e use policy b fo r the computer on campus . My understanding of the policy is that it is set up to com.ply with community tandards or social nonns in this area. Mr . tewart the lab assistant that "kicked M . Jensen out of the lab" touched on this. I am not a.sociology major, but my understanding is that every culture and society on Earth has a er of norms that the majori~y of the people comply with . However, there are exceptions to those nonns, such a public nudity in our society. You don ' t see nudity everywhere you go here in Cedar. Don 't get me wrong, it would probably be great fun to go to a grocery store and purcha e a loaf of bread and some Ramen with the help of a buck-naked cashier, but I just don't think it ' ll happen . However, I am sure that if all the people Living in Cedar and the areas were polled , there would be some that wouJd like us all to around in our binhday suits. The point I want to make is: why sho uld those of us that comply with social norms or the majority have to adapt and change for the minority. If the majority is going to change for the minority then let ' s accept porno wholeheartedl y. If we can view pornography in the ELC. or at other computer tenninals across campus, then I think the library . \ ' |
