Oh, happy days could be here for many students with the conting of a major chain food franchise. Maurice "Moe " Hinton, the new SUU Food Service director; said h·e has been trying to get a company interested in our campus and student community. ll's heco tough going for SUU, because of the student population base required by most franchised chains. MThe university has ro get the student population up co 10;000 enrolled to be able to support a franchise, ~ Hinton said. Hinton, who was the food service director for Utah State before transferring to S U, had franchi e under his supervi ion while at Logan. · A Pizza Hut and a Cafe lbi were part of the food ervice available to bu y students at Utah tate . . Under the franchise ystem the university usually owns the franchise and pays a predetermined amount of the profits to the parent company . However, there are exception to thi rule. Former SUU President Gerald R. herratt wanted a franchi e and had the food service taff try to arrange for one many year ago. That 's when th·e university discovered the population basis for profits desired by the major chains. At Hinton 's urging, the Cafe Ibis franchise , a custom coffee cafe, may . occupy the spot where the Country Store is currently located in the maJJ of the Sharwan Smith Center. Starbuck's Coffee decJined because their 'franchise director said that SUU is too far from their distribution center to merit consideration. Hinton said that coffee machines need constant maintenance because "goop" builds up in the latte and espresso machinery. If another franchi e coroe to the university, the T-Bird Grill will be the location filled, with current employees remaining under the new venue. The T-Bird Grill, owned by Food Services, is already set up for most of the proce e involved in fast food preparation. Hinton has been in the food ervice admini tration bu ine for almo t 20 years and has· made key contacts with several repre entatives for major chain food franchi e .
