Here comes Santa Claus, yeah , principles, but co each ot):ler as well. . 1 am thankful that they had the courage to giv~, up everything they had in pursuit of a freedom that so often is taken for granted in our time. We live in circumstances that, com.pared to other countries, rival that of royalty. We have freedoms afforded to us that p eople in other areas only dream of. We have a marvelous heritage, and a glorious opportunity to move forward with the same courage as our ancestors, whether they were on the Mayflower, natives of this great land, slaves, or foreign immigrants. It's the opportunity to continue creating a society based on the original social and moral ideals espoused by these great pioneers. I am thankful for each courageous act that has shaped this country. I am thankful for the hlack woman who stood up for herself by staying in~ her scat, and in tum played an integral role i1_1 civil rights reform. , I am thankful for the quiet, unassuming peopl~ you see everyday, doing what's right, trying their hardest co make this world better. 1 am thankful for the positive attitudes of those who face physical and emotional challenges that mak~ . strong men cry. We all have examples of this courage in o ur lives. This is the season we've been granted to express our gratitude co these people and for these circumstances, however humble , that have graced and shaped our lives. This Thursday, turn off the footba ll and take time to reflect on where you would be without your h eroes, your special examples and your particular blessings. To you , my heroes, I say "Thank you, and I love you." here comes Santa Claus in August! Why don't we just start decorating and selling stuff for Christmas in January? We might as well, being as how in August I saw the first Christmas display in a local store. I think we should just c hange a ll of the holidays into an excuse co buy something o r decorate for Christmas. Instead of Halloween, we could call it Alm ost Two-months ' til Christmas Have You Got AJI Your Presents Yet? Oh , And By the Way, Trick or Treat? I realize this is an awfully long name for a holiday, but given the present mindset of most of the country it really doesn 't matter. All that matters is that I get the last @#$%## Teletubhie, even if I have to claw the eyes out of the little old lady who's reaching for it too! That's the Christmas spirit! l'iot to divert from the "j olly " ( meaning "freaked-out ") feeling of this "festive " time, but J think it's fitting that some time be devoted to Thanksgiving. A lot of people have a lot of different ideas about Thanksgiving . It has moved from a celebration of reverent worship and gratitude to God to a celebration and reverent worship of a large bird and football . .What's wrong with this picture? Not that we shouldn 't be thankful for large birds and football. I, for one, am very thankful for both. Without football , how would we be able to tell if men had any feelings? I'm thankful for these things, but I don't think this should be our focus . Reflecting on the sacrifice made by ancestors who made the rough journey across the Atlantic ocean to find freedom from re ligious persecution, I am In awe at the dedication these Lisa Dawn Perry is a junior communication men ·antr ·worfferi had , not on ly to their . major from St. George. . 1 |
