Show THE UNIVERSITY JOURNAL· SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY· TUESDAY, AUGUST 25, 1998 One Card System now in use By BILL JUSTESEN JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Students should plan on getting a facelift this fall semester. According to Mindy Benson, manager of the Sharwan Smith Center, the university will rely on the new One Card System to identify itS students. The ''ThunderCard," as it is n.1med at SUU. replaces past 1D Cards with a contemporary look that includes the picture and name of students on the front. A magnetic strip on the back connects the ThunderCard to a university database via a card reader. Benson said that card readers are currently placed in food seivicc areas, the SUU Library, the Bookstore and the Convenience Store. Other plans for the card include getting into athletic events and Testing Center, for obtaining grades, and for paying tuition. "Students must have a fall sticker in order for the card to be valid," said Wes Brinkerhoff, SUU bursar/ cashier. Students can receive a fall sticker at the Cashier's Office after proof that tuition and fees have been paid for the semester. The ThunderCard works similarly to a debit card. In order to build the cash value of the account to purchase books or food, students must pay the Cashier's Office by cash, check, or credit card and request the amount be applied to the ThunderCard. If a stude nt desires to know the remaining balance, he or she can ask in1mediately after making a purchase or request the infoonation from the cashier's offices. Added benefits of using the card include ·a new voting system. According to Benson, computer tem1inals will be placed in the various colleges throughout the campus where students can swipe their ThunderCards, vote, and return to their homework and class schedule without much interruption. She said the system will be easier to access for students with classes away from the student center and that voter lines would be shorter. Benson added that voter turnout should be higher. Nevertheless, a word of warning on ThunderCard security comes as the new cards are issued. "Students should not loan the card to other students," emphasized Kevin Ruth Wright, an SUU software specialist, "If they want to treat somebody to a Coke, they should present che card themselves." She said that if a ThunderCard is lost or stolen, the student should immediately contact the Cashier's Office to deactivate the card and if a replacement is needed, a $10 fee is assessed. Wright also said that if a transaction is ever questioned, a· student can request a printed transaction log from the Cashier's Office. As of now, the TbunderCard replaces the cards used by Food Service and are also necessary to check out a book from the SUU Library. To obtain a TirnndcrCard, students should go to the Sharwan Smith Center between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday thro ugh Friday to have their pictures caken during the first week of school. Various time slots wiU be available for two weeks after the first wefk. Brinkerhoff said that returning sllldents will be able to use their old 10 cards for a brief period of time but a TirnnderCard should be obtained promptly. (The world) is moving 10 a moneyless society," Benson said. "We are expanding with it." _ _ _111 1 T11e One Card System replaces the old student identification system, amt cards are currently a11t,i!ab/e at the Sharwan Smith Center next to the Fitness Center. 17ie cards will be used for all student activities, as well as a debit card for use at food services on campus.
