Bill C linton, as Lyndon was fo nd of rem inding us in his day, is the onl y president w e've got . And C lin ton is the Rodney D angerfield o f presidents. He is so con stant ly an d so cas ua ll y ab used, vilified, dism issed, m ocked and generall y treated as a p unching bag by every sni de little t werp w ith a press pass th at it's a li ttle sta rt ling to rea lize that his approva l rat ings con t inue to ride in the mid-SOs. Wo uldn 't guess that from reading t he papers, would you ? On the wi lder sho res (lf ta lk radio an d th e parano id-righ t press, C lin to n is regularly accused o f murder, drug dealing and any num ber of lesser crimes. A substa ntial mino rity of t he c itizenry seems to prepared to believe he sucks eggs, runs o n all fours and m o lests sm all chil dren - w hich is especia lly odd in t hat his sing le most st ri king pu blic attribute is his etern al nicenes . In th e five years o f h is p res idency - d u ring wh ich ti m e he has had a range of abuse heaped on h is head - we have seen h im respond somew hat curt ly cxacll y twi ce. The oth er day in Mexico, he answered two u n pleasa n t questio ns abo ut hi wife by sa ying qui etl y, " No and no," and t hen he s h u t h is m o u th a nd ti g h te n ed hi s l ips. Th is t itanic eruption of vo lcan ic tem per caused a great twittering in Wash ington. That's pretty much how it goes for Clinton. lf there is one s ingle thing he has done or fa iled to do that has not been viciously criticized, I wis h yo u w o ul d poi n t it o u t to m e. H e has been criti cized for dumping his friends w hen t hey get in t roub le and for no t dumping h is friends w hen t hey get in tro u bl e. H e's criti cized for bas h ing Rep u b li cans; he's cri t ic ized fo r wo rk ing with Rep u b li can s. T h e m an ca n ' t e ve n p ro m o te volu n teerism w it hout being criticized. All of-w hi ch sets off m y con t raria n impulses. I fra n k ly do n't ca re abo ut h is sex l ife - I do n 't think it's any of m y business. Nor do I care about t he stupid land deal he got into in J 978. Have you ever seen so much fuss m ade about so littl e in your life? If Clinton were personally corrupt, he'd be rich by no w. Po litica ll y corru pt ? Yes, I thin k so. But then you get into t horni er issues, such as: Compared to who m ? Is t he problem C linton, o r is it t he system ? T hey're all in hock to big con tribu tors. ls I • it wo rse t o le t ri ch fo l k s bu y a ni gh t in t h e Lin c o ln Be dro o m o r t o le t th e m re wri te en vironmen tal regulatio ns? If it is sleazy beyond redemptio n fo r Cl in to n to t a ke mo ney fro m a fo reign bus inessman t hrough a shell corporati o n, then it's just as sleazy for t he Rep ublicans, w ho d id it as well . Yeah, I'd Li ke to kick 'cm all out, bu t I think it w ou ld be mo re useful to completely change t he campaign financing system - and put an end to pa id po lit ica l ad s w h ile we' re a t it . At leas t C li nto n s u pp o rt s c h a n g i n g th e c am pa ig n fina nc ing laws, which is m o re t han can be said fo r the R's. In m an y ways, Cl into n is the mos t s k ille d po li t icia n I've ever watched work. I kn ow it's r i di c ul o u s to co mp la in a bo ut a pol i ti c ian behaving li ke a politician - fish gotta swi m and po litic ians gotta dea l - bu t m y problem w ith him is s impl y that. T oo much politician in hi m, not en ough leader, not enough figh te r. He's not going to get dog t h ro ugh a Republica n Congress: If hadn' t been fo r Bob Dole, the Senate w o u ldn ' t eve n ha ve rat if ie d th e c h emica l wea pons ban. You can't m ake deals with people w ho do n' t wan t t he governmen t to work. T hey don' t want it to wo rk well; they don't want it to wo rk at all . The Republican s aren't interested in fix ing govern ment - t hey want to destroy it. Wh y let t hem make th is country worse? Why let t hem abo lish t he ta x credit for invest ing in · low -i n co m e h o u s in g w h en we co n t inu e to subs idize housing for D ona ld T ru mp, who gets to write off th e interest on his fa m ily mansion, h is New Yor k co nd o , hi s v i ll a i n As p e n , his townhouse in M iami and his vacation compoun d in Southern Califo rnia ? Wh y cut t he capital gains tax a n d t h e es t at e ta x w h e n t h e ri ch a ren ' t w illing to in ves t eve n $5 billio n of th e $ 112 bill ion needed to repair schools in th is country? Yo u tell me what's a better invest ment. f thin k C linton ough t to give up on try ing to m ake deals with t hese folks an d just start raising Cain. Veto every piece o f t ripe they send him .
