It's not that th e WAC co mmiss ioner has an ything against W yo ming, perhaps th e m ost overlooked 10- 1 t eam in th e count ry. But it 's BYU, no t Wyo ming, th at can m ake th e s tatem ent on th e fi eld t hat the WAC has been trying to argue off of it - th e confe rence shoul d be take n seri o us ly as a foo tball power by th e bo wl a lli ance. " We' re ta lking abo ut what this m ea ns to th e WAC I 0 years do wn the road," Benson said . "We can' t I continue to be treated like a I l second ti er conference." Much is o n the line for both No. 6 BYU and N o. 20 Wyoming when th ey meet in the expanded league's first ( title game Saturday at the sold-out Sam Boyd Silver Bowl. BYU is a JO 1/ 2-point favorite in the game matching the two division winners in the conferen ce Karl Benson th at grew to 16 teams t his year. For BYU, it' s a chance to cap its best season since winning the national title in 1984 by getting an invitation to the Fiesta Bowl. Fo r Wyoming, it may be its only chance to get into a bowl game unde r lame-duck coach Joe Ti ller, despite a record that might ordinari ly attract some postseason attention . "I definitely would think that wou ld be a miscarriage if Wyoming we re to be excluded with the type of team that I kn o w we have," said co rnerback Waymo n Levings ton. Even more is at stake for the WAC, whi ch desperately needs BYU'in th e Fiesta Bo wl to support its claim that it is a m ajor footba ll conference. "The who le image of the WAC is of it being a conference that doesn't get th e same notoriety as th e o th e rs," Benson said. " It shows in th e fa ct th e WAC is o n th e out side of th e alliance and som e feel if th e WAC doesn't dese rve to be a full -fl edged alliance m e mber, it does n' t deserve a team in t he bo wls." The WAC has a lready voiced it s d is pl eas ure t o directo rs of th e bowl a lliance, and the p residents of th e 16 WAC uni ve rsiti es will m eet in a con ference ca ll today to di sc uss possibl e options if BYU win s and docs no t get a Fi esta Bowl bid. Benso n said the league co uld go to co urt to try a nd guarantee a spot in the alli ance bowls fo r team s that achi eve a cert ain ra nking, rega rd less of th e · conference th ey arc in . " We wa nt changes made in the alliance that will trea t the WAC in a fair ~ mann er, " he said. " T hen ~ we wo uldn ' t be going e through this process of ~ wondering w hether we' re in g or o ut. " ~ If Wyom ing wins, of ;j: COursc, Benson will have I- littl e to wo rry abo ut. T he Co wbo ys wil l head for th e Ho lida y Bo wl, whil e BYU would likel y be re legated to th e C opper Bow l. "We can't wo rry abo ut an ythin g beyond this week," BYU coach LaVe ll Edwards said. "I' m not wo rri ed abo ut o ur guys losing their focu s. Th ey kn o w th e eas ies t way to fal l off th e m o untain is to get caught loo king ahead. " BYU, which beat W yo min g 23-20 las t year but did not play the Cowboys thi s year, com es off its first bye wee k of a lo ng seaso n to continu e a rivalry th at has see n t he tea m s play ea ch other 64 tim es. BYU' s only loss thi s year was 29- 17 agains t Washingto n, while Wyo ming's lo ne defeat was 28-24 to San Diego Stat e. Even with a 10- l record, thou gh, the Cowboys al most certainl y must win to get in a bo wl, while BYU is already guaranteed a bow l spot somewhere. Jazz beat Lakers for 12th straight win SALT LAKE CITY (AP} - John Stockton got things going in the second period and Utah's "old man" Karl Malone exploded in the third as the Jazz soared over the Los Angeles Lakers to their 12th straight victory Wednesday night. " I'm supposed to be an old man," said the 33year-old Malone, who had 26 points, including 17 in the third quarter, in the 101 -75 victory. "But these guys right here (his teammates}, they're going to make m e want to keep playing. " I've never felt better o r had as much fun as I have this season," saig,,Malonc, who sat out the fourth quarter as the Jazz coasted to their second win over the Lakers in two weeks. " We executed and played well, and everyo ne was ready to play. But I like it that no one is getting too h yped after a big win." T he Jazz halted the Lakers' three-game streak.
