Evans believes the trio's major contribution to the Thunderbird fortunes will come in the areas of athleticism and perimeter scoring. Essex, who will come to Cedar City from Nebraska's Mid-Plains Community College, averaged 14 points per game last season. He's expected to play mostly in the off-guard spot at SUU, but Evans says he could also see time at small forward. Essex played his freshman season at Navarro Junior College in Texas. Williams, a teammate of Essex at Mid-Plains CC, used outstanding strength and athleticism to average 10 points and five rebounds per game for the Knights in the just completed season. Williams played one season at Cal State Fullerton of the Big West Conference before transferring to MCC. Hill put up 15 points, four rebounds and four assists per outing as the starting point guard at Golden West Junior College in Huntington Beach, Calif. Evans expects Hill and Andy Newman, who signed with SUU during the November signing period, to battle for minutes in the starting point guard spot. "All three of these players are tremendous athletes that should have an immediate impact next year," said Evans. "Essex and Hill both have the ability to score on the perimeter and Williams should block a lot of shots and be among our top rebounders." SUU freshman catcher Christy Burge has been named to the All-Western Athletic Conference second team. Burge, a graduate of Bingham High School, carried a .337 batting average, which ranked 15th overall in the WAC. She finished third in the conference with 17 doubles and third in doubles hit per game at 0.28. The Riverton, Utah, native set a new SUU school record for the most hits in a single season with 57 in 61 games. Burge led the team in several offensive categories this season , including batting average, home runs (4 ), doubles (17), RBI (33 ), slugging percentage (.521) and total bases (88). Burge is the first SUU player to receive All-WAC honors since 1994 when Heather Olsen received honorable mention recognition.
