Show nn1 Inter-Local Agreement provides recreation facilities I THE UNIVERSITY JOURNAL• SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY• FRIDAY,'.•.• SEPTEMBER 30, 1994 LOCAL NEWS - By LEAH WOOD SENIOR STAFF WRITER "I want to make an awareness that there is a concern. Student interest in the facilities will not be placed on the bottom of the totem pole," said Rich Belknap, intramural director. Belknap and Activity Vice President Heidi Heywood attended a city council meeting Sept. 26 to advocate the needs of the Intramural Program in relation to the Inter-Local Agreement. The Inter-Local Agreement is a cooperative effort of Cedar City, Iron County School District and SUU to provide for the recreational demands of citizens and students in Cedar City. "Basically, our situation in intramural is that there is a shortage of fields," said Heywood. "We're striving earnestly to find fields for the programs." As an example, the Bicentennial Park is currently being used by the Intramural softball team. "We need to be involved with the communi ty to help come up with more recreational facilities and fields for everyone. We need to help in anyway that · we can because it will only help our situation," said Heywood. Those sponsoring the agreement hope it will provide more recreational opportunities and better facilities for both the community and SUU. Along with Heywood and Belknap, a number of community members voiced their opinion concerning the agreement. 'Student f aciJlti~s will not ~e pldced on the bottom of the . ' totem pole,' says Intramural Director Rich Belknap. "I think the more we get in recreation the better," said Frank Berrett, executive director for the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce. "I wish they' d double (facilities) they have now. It will bring in a higher class of citizens because there will be more offered. It's targeted to everybody of every age." "As a parent, I know that the biggest problem is no place to practice, 11 said Melanie Hirschi. "I was delighted when I heard through the PTA that the school district and city are going to work together. If they work together, the public will benefit and the schools will benefit." · Hirschi is a teaching assistant at Fiddler Elementary and she has been a Little League president for four years. "The more recreation, the cleaner and better people we'll have come into our community. The more we can involve the kids in our community, the better off we'll be," said Steve Mitchell, an adviser for the Men's Association, a volunteer group. "The community is growing with families coming in. The more activities we have to provide kids, the more it keeps them out of our business, 11 said Lt. Glen Miller of the Cedar City Police Department. City Councilman Dale Brinkeroff said, "These are not just for the kids. They're for anyone who can muster up enough steam to get out there and use them." For less than adollar aday, both will give you t11e power you need to survive this semester.
