Show . - . ---- -- --- - --- ---------'------------------- Student Development Center can help in a number of ways "Our purpose is to help students become self-sufficient academically and socially," says Judith Bonniksen, director of Student Development, "by providing support services and programs. We don't tell students what to do. We just try to put out a helping hand and make students aware of the options that are available." The staff members of SUU's Student Development Center advise students on careers, choices for majors and minors, and setting up class schedules. They oversee University Orientation class, provide academic counseling and direct students to other campus offices for more specialized needs. "We're often the first ones that students and parents meet when they come to SUV,'' Bonniksen says. "And we can help them get appointments with faculty advisers or find other campus services they require." Testing services include CLEP, ACT, SAT, LSAT, MAT, MCAT and a variety of interest inventory and career decision tests. One of the main functions of the Student Development Center is to give entering freshmen "tools to help them become successful in their college career," she says. FALL 1994 has five two-day freshmen orientation workshops scheduled- students can register for any one. During the workshop, freshmen will learn about SUV and register for fall quarter classes. "It's a chance for students to get everything ready for next year and to make new friends ." The agenda for the two-day workshop includes pizza, a Dutch-oven dinner, an over-night stay in campus housing, panel discussions on time management, decision making, preventing the abuse of drugs and alcohol, and h ow to avoid date rape, as well as advisement, registration, and scheduling. "We want students to understand that this is a comprehensive university and not a liberal arts institution; students must have a declared major in order to graduate. The Student Development Center staff offers resources to help students decide what educational course is best for them." fudith Bonniksen is director of the Student Development Center and, as such, aids students in a variety of ways PLAN YOUR EDUCATIONAL FUTURE AROUND A2 + 2 PROGRAM The Place to IWO-YEAII IISSIJCIATE & TWO-YEA/11/ACHEUJR'S DESREE ''Hang-Out'' SEE THE BIOI.OIY, BUSINESS OR TECHNOI.OIY DEPARTIENTS FOR MORE INFORMATION, OR CAil DR.
