It has both the philosophy and image of sanctuary, and its friendly staff is concerned with students' positive adjustment to college life. The Multicultural Center knows that ethnic minorities and foreign students will experience adjustments different from those of SUU's mainstream students. The Center has a variety of resources to help students reach their highest potential, and provides support services and opportunities to develop leadership and communication skills. Services offered by the Multicultural Center include leadership programs, academic advisement and scheduling, personal and career counseling, tutoring and study groups, and scholarships and financial advisement. The Center occupies a unique position on campus providing academic enrichment in multicultural issues to all students through International, Polynesian, Black History and Native American Week programs. These focus weeks are now offered for SUU credit. The Center also acts as a bridge to extracurricular and civic activities in the community. International, Polynesian, Inter-Tribal and Black Student Union clubs are sponsored by the MCC. These clubs, open to all students, offer opportunities for involvement in many campus activities including sports tournaments, a luau, pow wow and Miss Indian SUU Pageant. Keawe Gilman is assistant director of the Multicultural Center. Machining Into the 21st Century A recent government survey found a great shortage of machinists in Utah, showing that some 500 per year ar e hired from out-of-state. SUU has the remedy for this shortage-You! SUU's Computer Numerical Control program is designed to train students to take those jobs that are being filled by those trained and experienced elsewh ere. In fact, since SUU's program began in 1990, it's enjoyed a 100 percent placement for its graduates. Those trained as computer control machinists can command starting hourly wages w ell above average that can be doubled after fou r years. Southern Utah University's CNC program is designed to train machinists who can step right into positions upon graduation. The program covers four of SUU's quarters, typically from late September through the following year's September, and includes instruction from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. This allows students the freedom of their afternoons to pursue afte r-sch ool employment or other interests. There is a minimum o f homework in the course. Additionally, open-entry scheduling is available for those who wish to enroll at their con venience. CNC students are typically men and women who are recent high school graduates and who are retraining after several years in the job market. The course, taught in SUU's machining lab of the Technology Building, consists of two hours of class time and four hours of lab time daily, providing h ands-on instruction and learning. Subjects include Shop Safety, Shop Math, Blueprint Reading, Precision Measureme nt, Manual Control Machining and Computer Control Machining. The instructor is Roger Greener, who has b een a machinist for 14 years and who has directed the SUU program since its inceptio n. CNC students at SUU enjoy all privileges accorded mainstream students and, additionally, loans, grants and other financial aid is available to qualified students.
