Show Registration under way (continued from page 3) fee will be charged to second session registrants after July 18. "Well over 100 courses or programs will begin in nearly 30 disciplines during the second session of our summer program," Carter said. "Plenty of educational and recreational-education opportunities still exist. Our climate, setting, and academic history and background make for a very appealing summer school." Among the many workshop and specialty offerings remaining this summer are a group of programs related to the Utah Shakespearean Festival, including falconry, actor combatant training, introduction to stage combat, Shakespeare for teachers, Camp Shakespeare, and a series on "Food As Metaphor. " Also upcoming are a creative writing workshop (July 25-29), a United Spirit Association drill team and cheerleading camp (Aug 1-5), a beginner-through-advanced gymnastics camp (July 18-22), and a "Canyonlands Summit" offering a variety of nature-related activities for entire families (Aug. 6-12). Information for any of these programs is available by calling 586-7850. Art exhibits are open pair of traveling art exhibits featuring watercolors and works by artists over 80 years old are being shown at the Randall L. Jones Theatre in conjunction with the Utah Shakespearean Festival. Both exhibits are displayed in the lobby of the theatre, which will be open to ticket holders of Festival productions one hour prior to curtain time and during intermissions of plays being presented. "Eightysomething" is an exhibition of recent works by five artists who started 1994 in their 80s: Farrell R. Collett, Mary Kimball Johnson, Ella Peacock, Ted Wassm er, and Francis Zimbeaux. Johnson, who was actively painting up to the last week of her life, died January 20. A Colombian classical guitarist who has claimed four gold medals in major international competition in four years will perform Sunday as part of the Summer Evening Concert Series hosted by suu. Ricardo Cobo will play a program featuring music by seven composers, several of them of relatively recent vintage, in his performance which begins at 7 p.m. in the Randall L. Jones Theatre. There is no admission charge for the performance which is intended for adult audiences; children under age five will not be admitted. Included in the presentation will be a grouping of numbers by Sergio Assad and Leo Brouwer titled "Children's Ricardo Cobo Cradle." Individual compositions will include "Cradle Song," "Dreams," and "Morning Rag," by Assad; and "Berceuse," and "Sorcerer's Eyes" by Brouwer. "Cobo is recognized as one of the leading young virtuosos of the new classic guitar generation," Marla Bingham, manager of the Summer Concert Series for the sponsoring SUU Special Projects Office, said. "While completing his studies in the United States he received top prizes in five international competitions including gold medals in competitions in Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the United States." His formal debut came at the age of 17 when he played with the Orquestra Filarmonica de Bogota on a nationwide telecast for an audience of over nine million people. After becoming the first Latin American to win the Guitar Foundation of America medal, Cobo completed a successful tour of over 70 American cities and performed at the American Classic Guitar Congress, the Phillips Collection, and at Merkin Hall in his New York City debut. "He has made annual return tours of Latin America and has performed with virtually all major Latin American orchestras," Bingham said. "He has also completed tours of Europe and Asia and will return for another European tour late this year," Cobo has had record albums released in Latin America and in the United States. A second U.S. recording is scheduled later this year. 911 S. Main • 586-2345 We offer more for your taste buds than just frozen yogurt!
