When the two original organizers left for their missions, it was Roger who took the time to preserve the competition and organize it into what it is today. Last weekends competition included two days worth of events. The Buswell, Burley and Thompson families, who were loaded with d athletes during the early 70s have created an annual competition that is getting more attention with each year that passes. In what started out to be a meager and friendly competition nine years ago, has now grown into a miniature sports Olympics that has enough importance to draw family and friends from hundreds of miles away. Keith Buswell, one of the original organizers and an annual, participant ' put it best, Its just a bunch of good athletes who grew up as good friends and now are some great men that I like being associated with. Each youngster competed in 3 baseball skill events: Pitching for accuracy, base running tor speed and hitting for distance. The individual scores were then compiled into a total score to determine the winners. Ribbons were awarded to all 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, with patches being presented to each participant. Overall winners in the competition 9 Years Old were: 1st Bryan Wood, 2nd Mike Gary, 3rd Kyle Hemsley. 10 Years Old 1st Dan Van Wagener, 2nd Paul Noriega, 3rd Erick Barlow 1 Years Old 1st Darrel Hicks, 2nd Mark Lopez, 3rd Mike Prathera. 1 12 Year Olds Andy Archuleta, 2nd Bowen, 3rd Janies Snyder. 1st Greg After the Pitch Hit and Run Contest was finalized a special Home Run was conducted. Each Derby youngster was given eight tries to hit as many home runs as possible. We were leaving a week apart, recalled Burley who now teaches seminary at Weber High School, We knew our athletic activity would be curtailed somewhat with our missions. However we thought as a last fling, wed get up early for a couple of days and compete in as many athletic events as we could think of. The two good friends, along with other family members and friends, played golf, ran track, competed on the basketball court and participated in just about any athletic event they could think of. Points were awarded in each event and a huge traveling trophy was later purchased to have the All Sports school and college with his brother Blair following in his footsteps, now playing football at BYU. weightlifting, racquetball, tennis, golf, the mile run, field goal kicking, dash, discus long jump, the enough, they gather together for a banquet to tell of their more memorable experiences. Others who usually show up are Fred Thompson, Verl Thompson and Val Markus. There is some good competition between most of the guys, just enough to make it real interesting, said Ron Burley. Lou Burley, probably the eldest of the bunch and an older brother to Ron and Roger, is distinguished by the fact he has participated in every event in all nine years the competition has been staged. It makes an old guy feel new again, said Lou. Come Saturday evening when the entire crew has had just about in-la- -- Karate program begins at WSC An on-goi- karate program designed to carry the student from the beginners level to the black belt and teaching level will begin June 16 at Weber State College. Two separate classes will be held each Monday and Wednesday evening, the first from 8 p.m. and the second 0 p.m. Grant Morris, course instructor, said the introductory class will end 6-- Aug. 27. The first course lays the ground work for advanced instruction, said Morris, But it is also valuable in itself for anyone who does not wish to continue the full program. The entire series of classes takes approximately seven or eight quar- ters. Morris said the type of karate to be taught will be Chinese, with primary emphasis on practical fighting proficiency.
