Show a windswept valley of northern Utah on May 10, 1869, Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroad officials drove the last spike a golden spike that would link the country by rail. The even.t signaled a new era of progress for America. One hundred years later, local folks did more than recreate that event. They created the Golden Spike Empire, which wraps around the Great Salt Lake and up into the Wasatch Mountains to the east and out into the western deserts. They created a land of different sites and experiences by combining the counties of Box Elder, Davis, Weber and Morgan into one adventureland empire... an empire of fun and recreation. A golden empire of historic events and places, fresh water lakes and tumbling mountains. They created the Golden Spike Empire for you to discover. In TOUR 1 - ONE TANK MILES GOODYEAR CABIN (OGDEN). Goodyear was a trapper operating out of Ogden Valley years before the Mormon Pioneers arrived in Utah. His cabin, built in 1841, is the first permanent home constructed in Utah. It's locate next to Pioneer Hall 1 Museum on Temple Square which houses a collection of pioneer photographs, artifacts and memorabilia. It's open daily except Sunday from 10 a m. to 4 p.m. , 2. TEMPLE SQUARE (OGDEN). The imposing circular Temple with its 185 foot spire was completed in 1972. The Temple itself is closed to the public, but tours of the grounds and adjacent Tabernacle are conducted throughout the summer. 3. OGDEN ECCLES COMMUNITY ART A gracious Victorian sandstone the mansion, Community Art Center houses a fine permanent art collection as well as serving as host to numerous special exhibitions and community functions. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. 4 UNION DEPOT (OGDEN). Constructed in 1923 and designated a National Historic Site in 1973, this landmark building is the home of Golden SpikeEmpire's Travel Bureau and site of the Browning Arms Museum and CENTER. National Railway Hall of Fame. 5. MUNICIPAL GARDENS (OGDEN). A perfect place for a quick rest during a hectic day, the park provides 5 acres of carefully tended floral displays, gaslit walks and quiet picnic areas. 6 WEBER STATE COLLEGE (OGDEN). Spectacularly situated at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains, this fast growing pampus features a 12,000 seat special events center, a natural history museum and the Ott Planetarium with shows every Wednesday at 7 p.m. 7. OGDEN CANYON. The rugged overhanging cliffs are a spectacular sight any time of year, but in autumn the reds and golds of oak, maple and aspen make this one of Utah's prettiest drives. 8. PINEVIEW RESERVOIR. Located at the top of Ogden Canyon and one of the state's most popular recreation areas. A perfect spot for boating, fishing, water skiing, picnicking, camping or just relaxing. 9. HUNTSVILLE. Center of the exquisite pastoral Ogden Valley, Huntsville is the site of the home of the late LDS Church President facilities, boat rentals, ramp and dock. Open April through October. 11. GOLDEN SPIKE FRUITWAY. From this 18 mile July through drive is dotted with a series of pleasant rustic er stands offering the best of Utahs fruit crop fresh from surrounding trees. 12. L.D.S. TABERNACLE (BRIGHAM CITY). Built of native rock in 1881, this beloved building is open year round with guided tours in the summer months. 13. BRIGHAM CITY MUSEUMGALLERY. Featuring both authentic historical artifacts in recreated pioneer rooms as well as contemporary exhibitions, this charming gallery is open Mon. through Sat. from 1 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. 14. HERITAGE THEATRE (BRIGHAM CITY). The old Perry Ward Chapel is just south of Brigham City where the local folks have revived a great American tradition amateur Willard Bay State Park theatre. Specializing in musical comedy, they perform each weekend. 15. INTERMOUNTAIN SCHOOL (BRIGHAM CITY). America's largest Indian boarding school features a fascinating is campus tour, an Indian craft store and authentic Indian art displays. 10. WILLARD BAY STATE PARK. A huge reservoir with open water for sailing, swimming and power boat racing. The park has food concessions, picnic REFUGE. This massive refuge is a nesting ground for over 200 different bird species and visited by millions of ducks, geese and swan during the spectacular autumn migrations. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. 17. GOLDEN SPIKE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE. Visitors can visit the site of the driving David O. McKay, built in 1871.
