Show tf Sun Chronicle, December 1 , 1 979, Page 8 Veterinarian handwriting analyzed by Jan Bergen Veterinarians are very important people in our countrys health services. They are concerned with the nations food production, which is a critical problem, and the public health. The work is prestigious and satisfying. These good people prescnoe and administer medicines, serums and vaccines to sick and injured animals. They also and perform surgery. Vets also help prevent the spread of disease, which could infect humans. Thus, through strict health care and inspection, the veterinarian assures that the public will get wholesome animal products. Veterinarians work in animal hospitals and clinics, on ranches and farms, in homes and elsewhere where their skill is needed. Most are general practitioners, and many are out-brea- k specialists. important area of activitiy, and one the public is especially familiar with, is treating pets. These small animals form an emotional outlet for affection and companionship among families, and fill gaps left by deficient personal relationships. People will sacrifice to keep their pets healthy. By guarding against such diseases as rabies An through innoculation. Vets also protect the community against infected pets. On farms, veterinarians specialize in caring for cattle, swine, poultry, sheep and horses. In veterinary colleges, they teach, as members of the faculty. In industry and elsewhere, they engage in different forms of research. Also, veterinarians will be found in zoos, wildlife preserves, and even in the Army and Air Force. The training program is rigorous. One must fibst earn a regular college degree and courses should be slanted toward biological and physical sciences. This must be followed with four years in a college of veterinary medicine. After earning a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) the graduate must pass an examination to qualify for a state license. What are some of the personality requirements for becoming a veterinarian? Successful doctors say that an understanding of and a love for animals is paramount. The man or woman who loves living creatures will likely find happiness in this profession. Good health and strength are necessary. A veterinarian, like a medical doctor, is called upon to work under trying circumstances like bad weather or disaster. His or her strength may be called upon to control large or struggling animals, and frightened ones. Vets must be keenly comprehensive but also have the desire and ability to explore deeply, research and study. Analytical ability is necessary to appraise symptoms and other factors and to lake diagnoses. In fact, this quality should be emphasized, as the patient cannot tell the doctor what is the matter, and illness must be deduced from appearances and observable indications that point to deviations from normal patterns. Manual dexterity is necessary for skilled surgery. Often this is occasioned by severe injury more extensive than is commonly suffered by humans, since the whole animal often takes the impact. There is another important aspect to manual dexterity the sense of touch, which is the most important means of communication between man and the animal. Thus, a firm touch lends security to a frightened animal. Wavering of the touch may be sensed a3 fear on the part of the handler, and an animal in a vicious mood will be quick to take advantage of it. Last, but not least, the successful veterinarian must like people and be able to relate to them. Owners of animals are often frightened and grieved, and need reassurance and sympathy.
