McCarty Executive Secretary Utah Education Association It s often considered a taboo subject, but the following are a few lines about the subject of suicide anyway Did you know that suicide is the second leading cause of death Hangmgfoo y oung people Only accidents kill more of them Because we dont talk much about suicide, a lot of myths come along Ted Lovato, a school counselor, passed along some at ions on these fables Some people think those who talk about suicide don't go through with it, that it happens without warning, that suicidal people are fully intent on dying, and that once a person is suicidal, he or she is that way forever Those are complete or somewhat mistaken beliefs Eight of ten individuals who kill themselves have given definite warnings about their plans Studies show that the suicidal person gives many dues and warnings regarding suicidal intentions Contrary to the idea that suicidal persons are bent on dying, researchers say theyre undecided and they gamble with death," leaving it to others to save therrLAlrriost no one commit s suicide wit hout let t mg ot hers know his or her feelings Individuals who want to kill themselves are usually suicidal only for a limited period, and, once past the ensis, can live lives of accomplishment and happiness Some warning signals of a teenager s suicide attempt may be loss of appetite, abnormal sleepiness, insomnia, loss of interest and in school work, direct or indirect talk about the giv mg away of prized possessions Lovato says persons who express the death wish, either vaguely or explicitly , should not be ignored If one persn will cypress sincere concern for the potential suicide, Lovato says, it may sav e a life discussion will help relieve An atmosphere of free parent-chila lot of anxiety.
